Weight: Is It A Matter of Willpower?

Date:

By Nancy Clark MS RD
Is weight simply a matter of willpower? You might think so, given the number of runners who add on miles, subtract food, and expect excess fat to melt away. But it does not always happen that way. Older runners notice the fat that creeps on year after year seems harder to lose. And others who have slimmed down complain how easily they regain lost body fat.

The Endocrine Society (www.EndocrineSociety.org) took a close look at why we can too easily accumulate excess body fat, as well as why it's so easy for dieters to regain lost fat. (1) They describe fat-gain as a disorder of the body's energy balance system, not just a passive accumulation of excess calories. They highlight many factors other than food and exercise that influence body fatness, including genetics, the environment, and evolution.

usa.jpegALBUQUERQUE -- Christian Coleman crushed the world record in the Nike men’s 60 meters, while Sharika Nelvis broke the American record in the 60m hurdles Sunday afternoon at the 2018 USATF Indoor Championships.

Maurice Greene had twice run the world-record time of 6.39, in 1998 and again in 2001. The 21-year-old Coleman opened his 2018 season with a time of 6.37, but whether the mark would be accepted as world record was in doubt due to electronic blocks not being used at the meet.

On Sunday, Coleman left no doubt as to his status as the fastest 60-meter man in history and as the next star of men’s sprinting.

keychain.jpgOnce again, we are swimming in a sea of winged cupids, arrows, and red and pink hearts. It is the month of love, or so we have deemed it. At least, it is the month where the word “love” is used most, to describe what Merriam Webster refers to as “attraction based on sexual desire, or affection and tenderness felt by lovers.”

Yet love is so vast, that it simply cannot be contained by a single definition. These days, defintions of “love” like Webster’s “an unselfish loyal and benevolent concern for the good of another” and Eckhart Tolle’s “a state of being” and “recognizing yourself in another” tend to resonate most with me.

TALLAHASSEE, Florida -- It was a fine morning for a cross country meet at Apalachee Regional Park, with mostly sunny skies, light winds and 40 degree temperatures for the Masters Women and Men who went off at 9AM and 9:45AM.

In 2016, when they held the National Club Cross Country Championships on this same course at Tallahassee, Sonja Friend-Uhl sprinted away over the last 500 meters to take the crown. But there was a different set of competitors this time. Jennifer Bayliss and Maggie Shearer formed a lead pack with Friend-Uhl in the first loop of the 6K course. The pack held together with Friend-Uhl in the lead until the forested section of the loop, when Bayliss and Shearer started to pull gradually away from Friend-Uhl. Bayliss used her strength up the last hill and over the top to also pull away from Shearer, forging a 5 second victory in 22:14.

For good measure, she also ran 62.39 for 400m at the meet.

Note from Inside Track

jean.jpgHey, Chicken Little, the sky is not falling! Yes we know numbers of participants have dipped in the last few years. The number of races being produced annually has dropped off since 2015. Shoe sales are not as strong as they were in 2014. But, let’s consider a few things as we look towards the future.

Fewer events being produced is not a bad thing. Poorly organized events have been erased from the market as runners get smarter about selecting their events. Event producers that only care about massive profits, and not about the runner experience, have closed-up shop.
