July 11, 2008 from USATF press release / The USA Track & Field Foundation awarded numerous youth grants during their 2008 summer Board of Directors meeting in Eugene, OR, USATF Foundation Executive Director Tom Jackovic on Friday. The largest grant, of $5000, was made to the Carrie Tollefson Training Camp in Minnesota to assist with expenses and scholarships for youth athletes.

BoydQWorldJr08.jpg Baylor's Marcus Boyd won the men's 400-meter title on the third day of action at the 12th IAAF World Junior Championships and posted the top junior time in the world this season with a career best of 45.53 seconds. In addition, Texas A&M's Jessica Beard mined a silver medal in the women's 400 while Mississippi State's O'Neal Wilder earned bronze in the men's 400. The medal count for the United States crew is now up to six following the gold earned by Marquise Goodwin and Jeneba Tarmoh along with the bronze claimed by Terrell Wilks.

Eligibility: Masters Competition is open to all men and women 30 years of age and older. Age on July 19 will determine a competitor's age division. Proof of membership with USA Track & Field will be required from all U.S. citizens. You must obtain a 2008 USATF membership through your local Association or online at www.usatf.org/membership.

On the eve of the 12th edition of the World Junior Championship, the United States team is ready for Tuesday's opening day at Zdzislaw Krzyszkowiak Stadium. A record number of nations will be competing in these Championships at a stadium bearing the name of one of the best Polish post-war distance runners. Krzyzkowiak was a world record holder as well as an Olympic and European Champion.

M1500TeamOlympicTrials08.jpg In perhaps the most tactical race of these Olympic Trials, world champion Bernard Lagat . . . went to the lead at the gun in the men's 1500m, but 2000 Olympic Trials champion Gabe Jennings sprinted to the lead after 200m. Running 60-second laps, the tightly packed field came through 800m in 2:00.70 with Jennings, Lagat, Said Ahmed, Leonel Manzano and Lopez Lomong at the front. Approximately 1,000m into the race, Ahmed literally pushed his way between Jennings and Lagat to take the lead, and the race was on. . .

“Wow, and We Thought the Blue Ridge Relay Couldn’t Get Any Better!”

That’s a quote from director Ken Sevensky excited about the eighty teams that will be running in the 4th annual Blue Ridge Relay this September 5th and 6th. The Blue Ridge Relay, which started in 2006 with a field of 10 runners, will bring close to 1,000 runners up to the High country the Friday after Labor Day.
