September 1, 2008 from USATF press release (INDIANAPOLIS, IN) James Carney (Eugene, OR) took charge early on his way to his second USA title of 2008, winning the USA 20 km Championships in 59:11. In the women's race, Jill Steffens (Athens, GA) overtook Elva Dryer (Gunnison CO) just after the 12 mile mark to win the women's title in 1:08:48.

September 22, 2008 (Vail, CO) The final event in the La Sportiva Mountain Cup Series, the La Sportiva Vail Trophy Challenge Race, was held on August 31 in the midst of a beautiful and sunny Labor Day weekend in the Rockies. Series overall leaders Shiloh Mielke and his older sister Meadow Tarves made the trip to Colorado from North Carolina in the hopes of keeping their lead and winning $5,000 each in prize money. Before the race Tarves said, “We both just bought houses and the money will really help!” Close in the standings were Bernie Boettcher, just two points back from Mielke and Laura Haefeli, nine points back from Tarves.

Samuel "Sammy" Wanjiru changed that by taking gold in 2:06:32, in the process chopping almost three minutes off the oldest men's Olympic record in running, Carlos Lopes' 2:09:21 in Los Angeles 1984.

Justin Young of Colo. put his training regime to the test, winning in 1 hour, 5 minutes and 46 seconds. Defending women's champion, Hiromi Ominami , of Japan duplicated her 2007 victory finishing in 1:12:47, two seconds faster than her 2007 effort. Both earned $1500 for their victories with Ominami pocketing a $500 bonus for being a past champion.
