This morning, 58.9 percent of me was water. My resting heart rate was 57. And I averaged 184 steps per minute on my run. Fitness tracking and wearables are a huge market, and you might even have a device on your wish list. Pretty likely when I mentioned resting HR, you thought about checking yours on the device on your wrist.

I’m a data junkie, so I have a Garmin Forerunner 35 and plus a Garmin Index Smart Scale. So what the heck do all these numbers mean, and which ones matter?

HOUSTON — Breaking the two-hour marathon mark is a magical, athletic milestone that has fascinated the running world for years but has never been accomplished. Now, a team of researchers from the University of Houston and the University of Colorado Boulder has laid out a series of mathematical calculations showing about four and a half minutes could be shaved off the current world record by using lighter shoes, a collaborative drafting strategy and ideal course.

“Our calculations show that a sub-two-hour marathon time could happen right now, but it would require the right course and a lot of organization,” said CU postdoctoral researcher Wouter Hoogkamer, who led the new study, recently published online in the journal Sports Medicine.

WASHINGTON, DC – March 11 – Over 24,000 runners took flight through the nation’s capital at the United Airlines Rock ‘n’ Roll Washington DC Marathon & ½ Marathon braving the cold with smiles on their faces. United Airlines joined forces with the event for the first time as the title partner welcoming runners from all 50 states and 52 countries. Mid-March in Washington D.C. typically means early-spring like weather with favorable conditions for a fast run through our nation’s capital, but on Saturday, Old Man Winter refused to give in, which made runners work a little bit harder for their cherished finish medal.

Inspiration Is All Around Us

By Rae Ann Darling Reed

alisonraquelraeann.jpg (This column appeared in the March issue of Running Journal.)

Last month I posed the question “is it possible to literally be inspired daily?” This month, I am more sure than ever of my answer after reading the December 2016 and January 2017 issues of Running Journal.

One of my New Year’s resolutions is to cycle once a week. After missing six weeks of running last fall I discovered I need some extra cardiovascular work without the pounding. I committed to one cycling session at the gym each week in addition to strength training twice a week and running five days a week to prepare for Boston 2017.

He’s running Rock ’n’ Roll Marathon in DC as 6-time winner.

WASHINGTON, DC — When you are a husband, a father with two young sons, an international ship broker and a world-class marathoner/ultramarathoner with some zany accomplishments, you multitask.

So for an interview covering a range of subjects leading up to Saturday’s United Airlines Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon and Half Marathon Washington D.C., 42-year-old Michael Wardian stepped on the treadmill in his D.C. office garage during lunch hour, set it on a 12-percent incline and chatted away.

With a fast time of 2:56.65, Sonja Friend-Uhl won the Masters Women’s 1,000 meters race Sunday at the USATF Indoor Championships at Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Sonja, who lives in Boca Raton, Florida, races for the Atlanta Track Club.

About the race, she said, “I was conservative over the beginning. I just wanted to run even and kick with what I had left. I felt I could have run a little faster in the beginning, but I’m happy with the result. I wanted to go under 3 minutes and I did that. I was a little anxious about it. It is so great to be here as a masters athlete with all these open athletes. The track is amazing. I love this track - it’s a fast track.”

Turning 40 In The South This Spring

By Carolyn Mather
After working for two weeks last June at the 40th Grandmas Marathon, I realized that some of my favorite races in the south are reaching that milestone this year. For years my favorite 10K has been the Rose City 10K in Thomasville, GA. Not only will the 40th edition take place this April, but Jim and Carolyn Story have been the race directors for all 40 years. I suspect that must be a rare record and they do this as their love. From the silver age group award cups, to the medals, to the hot dogs and Little Debbie cakes, to the post race picnic, to the dj getting you up their "heartbreak hill," this race remains the best value in running and a great deal for $20 including a finisher's medal and gorgeous tee shirt..

remember.jpgBOSTON — The Run To Remember Boston road race through the city’s historic downtown will again feature a First Responder Challenge, pitting teams of police, fire and other first responders nationwide in the half marathon at the Memorial Day weekend event, organizers announced.

Run To Remember Boston’s half marathon and 5-mile races both start at the Seaport World Trade Center in downtown Boston on Sunday, May 28. This is the 13th year for the charity event, created as a tribute to Massachusetts law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty. From the Seaport World Trade Center, the scenic loop courses wind through historic downtown Boston, with the half marathon crossing over the Charles River along Memorial Drive in Cambridge before looping back.

ATLANTA—A person’s sex and running ability play a role in the decline of their performance in marathons as they get older, according to a Georgia State University study.

“We found that marathon performance decline begins at about 35 years old,” said Dr. Gerald Zavorsky, lead author of the study and associate professor in the Department of Respiratory Therapy at Georgia State. “For top runners, we determined the slowdown is about two minutes per year beginning at age 35 for men, and for women, it’s actually a little bit statistically faster of a slowdown, around two minutes and 30 seconds per year beginning at the age of 35.”

“If you’re an average runner finishing in the middle of your age group, statistically the slowdown starts at age 50. It’s similar if you’re a man or woman. The decline with aging in average runners is around two minutes and 45 seconds per year beginning at age 50.”

An interdisciplinary team investigates microstructure and micromechanics of the tendon-bone insertion

Walking, running, sprinting – every movement of the foot stretches the Achilles’ tendon. When jumping, the loads can approach ten times the body weight. Amazingly, the connection between the heel bone and Achilles’ tendon withstands theses tremendous loads. A team of doctors, physicists, chemists and engineers at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) has now discovered why.

Some 8,000 torn Achilles’ tendons are treated in Germany every year. And that even though it is the strongest tendon in the human body. It connects the ankle bone to the calf muscle and holds up to ten times the body’s weight. The tendon got its name from the – nearly – invulnerable Greek hero Achilleus, who was doomed by an arrow that struck him in his heel.

By Art Zimmerman, Mt. Pleasant, SC.

Art Zimmerman -2017 Red Rock Canyon Half Marathon.jpgWhile running the Bolder Boulder 10K a few years ago, I noticed someone wearing a T-shirt at the start of the race poking fun at us coastal runners saying “Sea Level is for Sissies”. In less than a mile from the start, I wasn’t smiling anymore as I was already breathing harder than usual. The altitude effect was alive and well.

As a senior runner now in my 70s, I knew when I signed up for the 2017 Red Rock Canyon Half Marathon, held in Nevada’s scenic Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, the higher altitude was going to be a real factor. But that was just the beginning of the challenges in the hardest of my 32 half and full marathons, including the tough Big Sur and Nashville full marathons. Red Rock was an 11 on my 1-10 difficulty scale.
