Some 4,100 runners and walkers participated in the 26th annual Savannah Bridge Run Dec. 2.

By Stephen Prudhomme

SAVANNAH, GA — Over the past five years, weather for the Savannah Bridge Run has ranged from unseasonably warm (70s) to unseasonably cool (40s). This year, the 26th annual event fell into the former category for a field of some 4,100 runners and walkers. One constant is the performance of Ben Brown, who has weathered the fluctuating temperatures and challenging topography to win the 10K race five years in a row.

When people find out I’ve run every day since the fall of 1978 they ultimately ask about my health. The questions fall into two categories: Illness and health. ‘How do you run when you’re sick?’ ‘Haven’t you ever been injured?’

I’ll admit to being too dumb to concede when I am truly too sick to run. I guess it’s because once I get out there on the asphalt whatever is ailing me takes a back seat to the satisfaction and enjoyment running brings me, so the chest cold, flu or whooping cough will just have to wait ‘til I’m finished running. (It does. Germs have patience.)

As I write this, I am putting away my Halloween decorations and starting to focus on Christmas. And Thanksgiving of course - although the only things I look forward to then are a jam packed race and a sumptuous meal. For me, Christmas is the big one! Because then I get a chance to put presents under the tree, for friends and for myself.

In this column I will suggest some running related gifts that you may want to give or receive during the upcoming holiday season. I will look at four price ranges: Under $20, $20 - $100, $100 - $1,000, and over $1,000. I will give general recommendations only, and will not endorse any specific brands. (Although I do mention a couple of products by name). And I will give you my favorite in each price range.

Lou.jpgHOT SPRINGS, AR — Lou and Charley Peyton received the 2nd RRCA Arkansas Lifetime Achievement Award at the 30th Annual RRCA Arkansas State Meeting.

The award was presented by David Samuel, former southern region director and Arkansas state rep, who said:

"Charley and Lou directed the first ten Arkansas Traveler 100-Milers along with numerous Arkansas Ultra Running Association (AURA) trail runs through the years. Besides being very active in the early years with the Little Rock Roadrunners Club, they were also responsible for the organization of the AURA. Both were recently inducted into the AURA Hall of Fame — and into the Arkansas Roadrunners Hall of Fame many years ago.

"I could spend 10 minutes listing the many running accomplishments by Lou Peyton.

In 1958, the RRCA was founded with a few member running clubs. That year, only a handful of road races were held nationwide. The athletes that founded the RRCA felt that the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU), the governing body for sport at that time, was not interested in serving the needs of distance runners.

Dear Mom,

It hurt. I knew it would. It doesn’t matter what drives you to run a marathon. Running 26.2 miles will always hurt.

Yet, we must go further back.

I remember calling you on a warm February afternoon asking you if you would mind The Post starting a cancer awareness campaign, which would end on Nov. 11 with the Charlotte Marathon. Of course you said yes. Who knew when Racing Against Cancer began in March that you would die in August?
