Cold Weather Running Tips

Always follow the RRCA General Safety Guidelines

Leave the headphones at home. Your ears may help you avoid dangers your eyes cannot see. Wet, wintery conditions may weaken tree limbs causing them to fall. Hearing the crack before the fall may be the difference between avoiding a falling branch or being tackled by a dead limb.

Avoid running on the roads in snowy conditions. Drivers have a decreased ability to maneuver and stop.

Winter means fewer daylight hours. Wear bright-colored, reflective clothing or a reflective vest so you are noticeable to area traffic. For added visibility, wear a lightweight headlamp or flashing light.

Full Circle: Finishing Last In A Race

Every new year is a new thing. But the past is merely prologue to the present, so we are all one year older than we were this time last year. But why complain? Why not just enjoy what we have and what we used to have? So here is a story of the past and the present.

Back in June of 1979 Kathy ran her first 10K race. It was a small race, the Run From The Fighting Lady 10K in Mt Pleasant, SC. It started in front of the old Yorktown Aircraft Carrier and went through the nearby neighborhoods of the city. She was afraid she might not be safe on the course, since she was afraid she would be behind everyone, so I told her I would run the race with her.

No, I’m not out of mind, even though it is winter and summer is almost unimaginable. Barren trees, cold rain, snow, early darkness and a biting wind blowing from the west may mean less than ideal running conditions. Early winter can also mean few races, a loss of motivation to train, and as such, a decline in overall general fitness. Spring and summer seem far away and it’s easy to convince yourself that spring and summer racing season is way, way out in the future. For many, late December, January and early February could possibly be the low point of the running calendar.

Tackling the Treadmill

By Ryan Warrenburg/ZAP Fitness
Given the choice, the vast majority of us would rather run outside on the roads or trails, feel the wind in our face and watch the scenery go by, rather than be relegated to the treadmill. I get it. But with little daylight and having to navigate sometimes icy and slick running surfaces, the treadmill can be a brilliant tool to get quality training in during the winter, and for many with hectic schedules, a necessity year round. This winter is time to stop thinking about the treadmill as the “dreadmill” and embrace the machine that can make all of us better runners. There are countless examples of professional athletes and coaches using treadmills to improve the quality of training by avoiding inclement weather, improving the specificity of a workout, and other purposes that we all can take advantage of.

Using Data to Improve Your Running

Armwarmers, breathe-right nasal strips, sunglasses, gloves — when you watch the elites race, they wear their share of accessories.

But have you ever noticed what a lot of them aren’t wearing?

A GPS watch.

There are a few reasons for this, one being they are often racing for place more than time and can also utilize the on-course clocks/pace car better than I can (if I just ran, say, 6 or 5 minutes/mile flat, the math would be so easy).

Molly Huddle is one of the finest distance runners of her generation. She is tough, meticulous and focused. I have watched her race from the mile to the marathon. What she has done with her coach, Ray Treacy, is fascinating to watch. How will she do in Boston? It will be exciting to see, with Shalane Flanagan, Desi Lindan and Jordan Hasay battling Molly in Boston in April 2018.

IMG_2095r.jpgThe night before the Space Coast Half Marathon I was dreading the race because of Achilles and piriformis pain that had gotten so bad I literally limped around when I walked the whole week prior. Each run was painful and not really enjoyable.

Clearly I needed a break from running to heal but with this Space Coast Half Marathon being the final race in the 5-year Big Bang Series, I had to do it.

Signal Mountain, TN resident Aden St. Charles top female, leads all day long, finishes strong in 9:25, to win national championship.

DSC03474-S.jpgCHATTANOOGA, TN — Because Lookout Mountain 50 Mile, 20 Mile, and10k takes place in mid-December, it's a fair bet the weather will be iffy, but this year, it was dry and perfectly clear — a beautiful day to be out in the woods. Yes, it was cold, in fact, the pitchers of water and sports drink at the early aid stations developed ice but that didn’t keep 179 runners from starting the 50 Mile which was this year’s Road Runners Club of America Ultramarathon Championship.
