savanna.jpgFitz and the Tantrums Drummer John Wicks finishes half-marathon and performs at post-race concert

SAVANNAH — The oldest city in Georgia played host to thousands of runners and hundreds of musicians and entertainers at the seventh edition of the Rock ‘n’ Roll Savannah Marathon & ½ Marathon on Saturday. Conditions in the “hostess city of the South” were warm for this time of year, but organizers had prepared to give participants the best-possible race and started the event 10 minutes early. Nevertheless, at the sounding of the starting gun, temperatures were in the high 50s—optimal for fast times and many PRs.

krahe.jpg The Internet has allowed more runners to work with coaches — and for more people to become coaches themselves. Just like runners, the story behind each coach is different. The how and why they decided to coach, and how they go about it.

Denny Krahe only recently became a runner — but worked as an athletic trainer, in physical therapy, and as a personal trainer, first. Based in Lakeland, Florida, when he finally caught the running bug, Denny caught it hard.

Now a running coach and host of the popular running podcast DizRuns, Denny is on a quest: to run a marathon in every state and to qualify for the Boston Marathon.

rcm.jpgThere's still time to register for the Rocket City Marathon, one of the premier marathons in the south for more than 40 years. This year's race will take place on Dec. 9, starting and finishing in downtown Huntsville, AL.

The scenic course takes runners through many of Huntsville's attractions, including running under the rockets at the Space and Rocket Center and a tour of the Huntsville Botanical Gardens. The flat course is a great chance to qualify for the Boston Marathon. Runners finish inside the Von Braun Center arena with music and lots of food.

An expo is held on Friday before the race with a pre-race dinner on Friday evening. This year's guest speaker at the dinner is renowned marathoner and ultra-runner Michael Wardian.

Brown.jpgWill Brown of Raleigh, NC, recognized as one of the Marine Corps Marathon (MCM) beloved Groundpounders, has announced his retirement from running the Marine Corps Marathon after having participated in “The People’s Marathon” for 42 consecutive years. The 71-year-old Brown made his final run during the 42nd MCM on Sunday, Oct. 22.

The Groundpounders were a select few who had officially completed every year of the event. By 40th MCM in 2015, only Brown and Al Richmond of Arlington, VA remained MCM Groundpounders.

Brown completed his 40th consecutive MCM and then returned to run the 41st MCM in 2016 but did not complete the 26.2-mile course. That resulted in Richmond being the only Groundpounder.

The Importance Of Marathon Planning

By Carolyn Mather
Over the past 20-plus years, I have written various articles about training for the marathon or for any distance event. I thought I would share a few of my insights attained from my 132 marathon completions and 40 years of distance running. There is really is no magic about the marathon. Training for the marathon is a BIG DEAL! It is mentally and physically tough and so much can go wrong in the race. Failing to plan effectively with all of the details is often the downfall of a marathoner. The major goal and the only thing that counts is finishing, so you must do your best to see that your goal is accomplished. To do this practice is a vital component of planning.
