(Editor’s note: On Dec. 10-11, the Florida Striders will have a 100-runner relay, each running a 5K, in an attempt to break the world record. They have to beat 40 hours, an average of 24 minutes for each 5K. Last year, they broke the world record for the 100x10K in a time of 77 hours, 17 FloridaStriders2.jpgminutes, 25 seconds.)

The 100 runners for the 100x5K World Record Attempt have been selected -- and what a group of runners it is.

WASHINGTON - (October 31, 2010) - The 35th running of the Marine Corps Marathon on Sunday morning started near the Pentagon along Route 110 and finished at the Marine Corps War Memorial (Iwo Jima). The temperature at race start was mid-40 and reached into high 50s under a sunny fall sky.

11-year-old has 100-mile mission

mara.jpgEleven-year-old Mara Davis of Mableton, GA, has pledged to run 100 miles from Sept. 27 – Nov 18. In doing so, she hopes to raise awareness, prayer support and funds for a mission trip to Kenya that she will take with her mother and other members of her church in November.

Mara started running two years ago and began competing last year. She joined a local cross-country club and qualified for the National Junior Olympic Cross-Country finals in Reno, NV, last December.

Robert Preston got to pick his race number and chose number 57 because it was his 57th marathon.

The Athens, Tennessee Chamber of Commerce executive director had traveled to Arkansas to run in the Arkansas Marathon in Booneville, adding another state to his list as he attempts to run a marathon in all 50 states by age 50. That’s nine years from now and he has 31 more to go.

track explosion.jpg The Track Xplosion Cross-Country Team of Raleigh, NC, is seeking to compete in the AAU Cross-Country Junior Olympics Dec. 4 at Disney, Orlando, FL.
The team has 35 students in grades 1-9 who practice three days a week and is in its second year. They compete in various cities in North Carolina in preparation for the Junior Olympics.

Several Panhandle Runners brought a little taste of Florida to the TransRockies Six Day Stage Run held in Colorado during the latter part of August. Joe Edgecombe, Andy and Andrea Weckherlin, Marty Kirkland, and Karen Stone (of Colorado) coordinated Checkpoint #2 during this six-day run.

Runners ran from location to location at altitudes of 8,500 feet to 12,800 feet during the 120-mile race.

doc photo 1.jpg Dr. Elizabeth Miller of Savannah, Georgia ran 60 miles on her 60th birthday Oct. 1 and raised $65,000 for the Humane Society. The funds will go toward establishment of a Community Low-Cost Spay/Neuter Clinic.

She started her run at 5:18 a.m. and finished at 5:58 p.m., bringing awareness to the community drive to raise $500,000.

Sarasota, FL-based ShamRockersUSA, a youth running group, is securing coaches across the country and will be a national organization next year, founder Diane Lyons told Running Journal.

“I’m on cloud nine,” she said, explaining that she is interviewing potential coaches for 14 new chapters in 7 states. She is seeking funding from the National Institute of Health “and any other interested group or individuals” for the non-profit youth group.

MCM Embarks on Multi-City Tour with Marathon Flame Marking Origin of Distance Running

QUANTICO, VA (Oct. 6, 2010) - The Marine Corps Marathon (MCM) will celebrate its 35-year history while commemorating the 2,500th anniversary of the Battle of Marathon and Pheidippidies' legendary run. To mark the occasion, the MCM will receive the Marathon Flame from the Municipality of Marathon, Greece, and embark on a multi-city tour beginning on Thursday, Oct. 21 and concluding at the MCM on Oct. 31.

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. - (October 2, 2010) - Anton Van Zyl from Ft. Lauderdale and Matthew Dobson from Jay, Florida were the first two finishers Saturday night at the inaugural Disney Wine & Dine Half Marathon at Walt Disney Resort near Orlando. In the women's division, Melissa Wisner from Washington, D.C. crossed the finish line first in 1 hour, 32 minutes, 22 seconds.

What was the largest race in America in 2009? It’s an annual southern event and started in 1970 with 110 runners. Running USA compiled a list of finishers from races across the country and concluded the greatest number of runners finished in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Peachtree Road Race 10K with 49,967. A Birmingham, Alabama runner was reportedly raped in September and a second female runner was approached but ran away before she could be harmed, authorities said. Both incidents were reported to have occurred between 6:30-7 a.m. The Birmingham Track Club quickly issued a warning to its members to not run alone.

Fundraising effort to benefit the One Love Foundation, created by the family of Yeardley Love

A fundraiser to honor murdered University of Virginia lacrosse player Yeardley Love will take place on Saturday, November 13 in Richmond, VA. Some of Love’s close friends are organizing “Every Yard for Yeardley” to honor her life and raise money for the One Love Foundation in honor of Yeardley Love (the “One Love Foundation” www.joinonelove.org), which was created by Love’s family in the wake of her death. Love died in May of this year as a result of domestic violence in nearby Charlottesville.
