(June 18, 2008) -- The ITU Des Moines World Cup scheduled for this weekend in Des Moines, Iowa, is back to its original format of a full swim-bike-run triathlon, race organizers announced this afternoon.The decision means that the elite race will remain the final qualifying event for the third and final spots on the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team.

Segal, of Holmdel, who won the Spring Lake Five in May, was followed closely by second-place finisher Tim Mulligan, 27, of Whiting, who finished 9 seconds back in 25:43.

Former Kansas State runner Mathew Chesang pulled ahead of fellow Kenya native Wesley Ochoro with about 100 yards to go and took first place in a gun time of 1:06:30. Ochoro was two seconds behind.

LSU won the women's team crown for the first time since 2003 and Florida State repeated as men's champions at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships over the weekend at Drake University in Des Moines, IA. The women's championship all came down to the final event between LSU and Arizona State.

A pack of fifteen runners went out together for the first mile.

Last year the race was a typical pre-summer day in June with more than modest humidity that would climb to about eighty degrees. This year the course would be littered with liters of perspiration as the region launched into a record heat wave.
