Hog Jog 5K Results Given

SMITHFIELD, VA — The 16th Annual Smithfield Hog Jog 5K was held October 14, conducted by the Peninsula Track Club.

This was the seventh year for a scored team competition where the times for the fastest 4 runners on each team was totaled with the fastest time winning. Over half the entire field were members of the 17 teams that competed this year.

Hearst to Buy Rodale

Runner’s World and other Rodale publications will be purchased early next year by Hearst, it was announced.

Rodale had earlier said it was exploring opportunities, including a possible sale.

Rodale has several publications, including Men’s Health, Women’s Health, Bicycling, and Prevention. The company’s book publications division is also included in the sale.

NEW ORLEANS — Ian Carr was the overall winner of the Octoberfest 2-mile race on Oct. 13 at Bayou St. John, finishing in 10:12. Paige Fisher was female winner in 11:51. The race is a New Orleans Track Club Grand Prix event.

New York, October 18, 2017— Running icons Tom Fleming, Ryan Hall, Lornah Kiplagat, Orlando Pizzolato, and Norbert Sander will make up the NYRR Hall of Fame Class of 2017, while Sports Illustrated writer Tim Layden will receive the George Hirsch Journalism Award, it was announced today by New York Road Runners. The Abebe Bikila Award recipient will be announced during TCS New York City Marathon race week. All seven award recipients will be honored on Thursday, November 2, at 4:00 p.m. at the TCS New York City Marathon Pavilion in Central Park. The event will be open to the public.

Harriette Thompson Dies at 94

CHARLOTTE, NC — Harriette Thompson, oldest female to complete a marathon, has died at age 94.

The former classical pianist ran the Rock ’n’ Roll Marathon in San Diego, California, at age 92 in 7:24:36 to set the world record for runners over age 90. She ran her first marathon at age 76.

CHATTANOOGA, TN — Nathan Pierce of Huntsville, AL, was the overall winner of the 7 Bridges Marathon but the course was too long by .63 of a mile and adjusted times will be announced. Daniel McGinley was second and Richard Reinhardt third in the men’s competition.

In the women’s event, Jackie Merritt was the winner, followed by Meghan Ogle in second and Kyra Fower in third.

Mott Wins Detroit Marathon

Jonathan Mott, 30, of Lakeland, FL, was the winner of the Detroit Marathon on Sunday, Oct. 15, finishing in 2:22:53. Second was Christopher Chipsiya of Mexico in 2:27:21. Girma Segni of Bronx, NY, was third in 2:28:42. Another Floridian, Sergei Zyrianov of Gainesville, was fourth in 2:31:48.

Historic Gold Rush 5K to be Held Oct. 21

GOLD HILL, NC — An 1800s narrow-gauge railroad line used in gold mining operations is now the Gold Hill Rail Trail and will be utilized during the first Historic Gold Rush 5K on Saturday, Oct. 21. Crushed gravel and woodland paths make up most of the course. A fun run for those 12-under will also be held.
