MONTGOMERY, AL — Alan Ash, cross-country coach at Jeff Davis High School, repeated as champion of the Montgomery Half Marathon on Saturday, March 11, finishing in 1:11:53. Zachary Sollie was runnerup in 1:19:08, followed by Lucas Culpepper in 1:24:37.
Mia Link won the female title in 1:28:30. She was followed by Samantha Sims in 1:36:11 and Mia Gentle in 1:37:13.
WOODLANDS, TX — Runners were led off course at the Woodlands Marathon by the lead motorcyclist, which shorted the course by eight-tenths of a mile, thus runners will not qualify for entry into the 2018 Boston Marathon.
LAKELAND, FL — Phil Brown, 40, ultra runner and husband of Running Journal columnist Mary Marcia Brown, was killed March 1 in a head-on crash with a truck while riding his motorcycle.
Brown had won the St. Sebastian, FL, 100 Mile race in November, setting the course record of 26 hours, one minute and 53 seconds (26:01:53).
WILMINGTON, NC – As part of its new mission, Leading Our Community to Outstanding Health, New Hanover Regional Medical Center (NHRMC) will be the official naming sponsor of the Wrightsville Beach Marathon. NHRMC will replace QuintilesIMS as title sponsor beginning in 2018.
Pedro Meraz, 38, of Wesley Chapel, FL, led more than 1,500 runners at the 20th running of the Myrtle Beach Marathon on March 4 with a time of 2:45:30. It was his first marathon win. Second place went to Dustin Sneed of Chapel Hill, NC, in 2:47:26, followed by Anton Bodourov of Columbia, SC, in third with 2:48:14.
COLUMBIA, SC — Andrew Baker, 27, of Greenville, SC, won the Run Hard Columbia Marathon on Saturday, March 4, finishing in 2:48:00. Orinthal Striggles, 41, of Columbia, was second in 2:54:08. Jonathan Grimm, 20, of North Augusta, SC, was third in 2:56:35.
RALEIGH, NC — Jase Tischer of Raleigh won the 14th Annual Umstead Trail Marathon here Saturday, May 4, completing the course in 3:05:08. Second was Mark Manz of Durham in 3:07:26, and third went to Christian Christopoulos of Raleigh in 3:13:21.
ALBANY, GA — Sergey Zyrianov of Gainesville, FL, won the duel at the Snickers Marathon on Saturday, May 4, finishing in 2:21:32.48, narrowly ahead of Teferi Regosta of Morristown, NJ, who was second in 2:21:32:55. Ethan Coffey of Knoxville, TN, was third in 2:26:17. Matthew Smith of Savannah finished fourth in 2:34:56 and Justin Turner of Pensacola was fifth in 2:42:19.
BREVARD, NC — Brandon Doughty, 23, won the Oskar Blues 4 Mile race on Saturday, March 4, in 19:32. Matt McClintock and Joe Stilin finished in the same time. All three are from Blowing Rock.
In the women’s division, Joanna Thompson, 24, of Blowing Rock, won in 22:20. Brenae Edwards of Bryson City was second in 23:21, followed by Nicole Dimercurio of Blowing Rock in 23:52.
