Hollman,_Lena.jpg__.jpgAnother year, full of hope and possibilities, lies around the corner. For us runners, hope might be that our training will go smoothly, and there are always possibilities to beat last year’s seasonal bests -- or at least to not slow down, if you are a masters runner. New Years is therefore a great time to evaluate what is working and what is not with our training and racing, and maybe also to try something different!

Yes, something different. You are probably familiar with the saying that we cannot keep doing the same things and expect different results. This month I want to give you a few hints and suggestions for new things to try out in your training. Some will hopefully result in faster racing times, while others are mostly for fun.

hawkins.jpgClaudis Hawkins danced and ran his way through life and straight into the hearts of everyone he met. Before his death at 93 last November, Hawkins was best known in the northeast Alabama area as a runner, but in his hometown of Rainbow City, he was known as an Astaire-caliber dance partner.

Yes, this tall, slender, effervescent nonagenarian could stride through a 5K course and cut a rug with the best of them. The often repeated adjective when describing Hawkins is “inspiring.”

Hawkins’ presence on the local running scene has been missed, but at no race more so than the recent Woodstock 5K, Anniston Runners Club’s signature event and the 2011 Road Runners Club of America’s (RRCA) National 5K Championship in Anniston, AL.

Win Gold, Silver, and Bronze Individual Medals and National Team Title
centralfloridastriders.jpgAltamonte Springs, FL – Thirty-two athletes from the Central Florida Gliders Cross Country team were among more than 1100 young competitors at the 2011 Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) National Cross Country Championship held December 3 at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Walt Disney World in Central Florida. Gliders were awarded a team gold medal; gold, silver, and bronze medals for individual performances; and 11 other individual medals for placing in the top 25 of age group competitions.

“Our athletes put in a lot of work this season and the AAU championship is a positive reinforcement for their commitment to cross country training,” said Gliders Cross Country Coach Mark Robinson. “Winning national titles is nothing new for this team as half of them were also on the Midget (ages 11-12) and Bantam (ages 9-10) championship teams in 2009 and 2007, respectively," says Coach Robinson.

The Mental Peak

Ferguson,_Richard.jpg__.jpgYou have trained really hard for your most important race of the year. Months and months of effort have been invested and you have sacrificed physically and mentally. It won’t be long now until you run your biggest race of the year. You want to be at your best, both mentally and physically. In other words you’re looking to “peak” for your big event.

Your training has gone well and you indeed feel fit and very well prepared. You understand that you will need to back off of your training in the weeks preceding the race to ensure that you’re rested and energized. The proper taper period and proper rest are most certainly a requirement for being able to physically peak at the proper time for your important race. But what about the mental part of peaking? Most runners are pretty good at physically peaking, but they totally ignore the mental aspects of peaking.

Special athlete needs expense help

MichaelMurray.jpgMichael Murray, a gifted 20-year-old paralympic runner from Nashville, TN, recently won the bronze medal in the 1500 meters in international competition at the Parapan (Pan Am) Games in Guadalajara, Mexico. It was Murray’s first medal in international competition. Teammate Markeith Price, also of Nashville, won bronze in the long jump.

The race was run at high altitude and Murray was not running his favorite distance – he prefers the 800 and 400. He suffered cramps and nosebleeds from the altitude and dry air.

YMCAcheck.jpg“The Go Commando Half Marathon and 5k presented by CDE Lightband announced Tuesday they would donate $35,000 to local non-profits and community organizations. The largest recipients, Clarksville Area YMCA and Fort Campbell Historical Foundation were on hand to accept the donations.

The intention of the Go Commando Half Marathon and 5k will always be to give back to the community; this money emphasizes that mission in a big way,” Channel Lemon, one of the Race Directors, stated.

An Observation From a Racewalker

It is fall again, the weather is cooling off and the race season is picking up steam. People are out in their training mode for the fall and winter races, from the 5K to the marathon. I have been a racewalker and racewalk official for more than 23 years. I have participated in many races as an athlete, volunteer, and race official. Throughout the years, the participation in the races has increased in numbers.

One of the factors for the increase is the runners are using the run/walk method that was introduced many years ago. This method is used by many training groups (including charity groups) and self-taught individuals.

Lisaphoto2.jpg Runners I have met are some of the nicest folks I have ever known and I can truthfully say that some of my dearest friends are the ones I run with currently.

It is difficult not to become close when you share the agony of a 20-mile run in the middle of August in Memphis, Tennessee, or a three-mile run in January when an "Arctic Express" cold-air blast dips down from Canada.
