Jon Gugala, is on tour with the Karhu Originals Airstream. Here is how his first day went, as they started this week in Texas. Today's column is a bit of a meditation on bats, getting lost on a run, time zones, and of course, the joy of being on the road with your own Karhu Airstream.

Dathan Ritzenhein had a superb end to 2012: he placed ninth with a two minute and five second personal best at the Bank of America Chicago marathon on October 7, 2012. Running a very calculated race, Dathan Ritzenhein ran 2 hours, seven minutes and 47 seconds, placing ninth. His two minute plus improvement gives just a hint of the talent that Ritz has in the marathon.

Finalizing Your Marathon Preparations

By Carolyn Mather, RN, PhD.
Mather,_Carolyn.jpg__.jpgThe last few days have been a little cooler, and after the hot and humid summer we have had in the south, I am sure many are now planning their fall or early winter marathon or half-marathon. Being a longtime participant of these events I thought this would be a good time to offer some surefire tips to make the event a bit easier for you.

Training for a distance event requires a great deal of commitment and mileage. Unfortunately improper planning or lack of planning can derail all of your dedicated months of preparation. As you enter the final weeks of training it is a good idea to choose and practice a strategy to assist you in dealing with the rough patch that inevitably occurs in every marathon.

It would have been human for USATF Georgia Association President Ian Dube to have concerns about any support his 2009 idea would receive. However, doubt never entered Dube’s mind.

Dube was proud of the tradition surrounding the sport of track and field in the state of Georgia and inside the Georgia Association and wished to bring added exposure to its rich tradition. But would the idea catch on?

Now, three years later, the proof shows in the numbers.

When the Georgia Association inducted its second hall of fame class in August at the Hyatt Regency in downtown Atlanta, the 300 guests in attendance put to rest any concerns of the idea catching on.

Watch, What You Say to Me!

WATCH, WHAT YOU SAY TO ME!.jpgOne of the differences between running and many other sports is its individualistic nature. How successfully you perform depends on you alone, and how hard you’re willing to go outside of your comfort zone is self-regulated. Our internal voice tells us when to push it harder, and sometimes an undermining voice arises and tells us to go back to sleep when the alarm clock goes off or to cut a run short. My internal voice often employs reverse psychology by appealing to my nuts running gene and asking, “What would a sane person do?”

But now we have other voices coming at us through what we wear on our wrist. Years ago running watches didn’t have much more than a stopwatch function.

The Runners’ Owner Manual

Jaggers, Cedric.jpg_.jpgWhat is the thing we find in every car and never read until we have a flat tire? The owner’s manual of course. Please no e-mails from those few of you who do actually read the manual from cover to cover, we would all probably be better off if we followed your example. Does the same hold true for runners? Wouldn’t we be better off if we thought of our body as something we owned that we need to take good care of?

I’m holding the manual out of my car in my hand and the table of contents has some really interesting chapters. So let’s use the title of the chapter and change the word ‘driving’ to ‘running.’

By Teri Saylor

Teri Saylor photo.jpgSo a few years ago on a frigid Saturday morning in the middle of winter, I came up with a brilliant idea for keeping warm during a 10-mile group run.

I would wear tights – the pantyhose kind – under a pair of thick track pants.

This arrangement would be just the ticket for staying toasty, I reasoned.

The tights were nice and snug, and the pants easily fit over them.
I felt great. For about five miles.

Eventually the running group split up, and I found myself running alongside a nice Asian fellow whose English language skills were shaky at best. Midway through the run, I felt an ominous creeping sensation deep within my layers of clothing.
