bio straight hair 015edited 72.jpg Runners are an interesting lot. For starters, as we get older, we are the only segment of the population, as far as I know, who are really eager to get older.

No matter where we run, awards will be given in our age group. When you first enter an age group, generally you are faster than your older counterparts in the same age group. As a runner reaches 58 or 59, for example, the 55-year-olds entering that same age group generally are going to be faster. Not always, but usually this is so.

As an avid runner, Susan is a longtime member of the local running club. For the past five years she has been one of the most active members, participating in almost every club race or activity. Susan hasn’t missed a day of training for years and she races whenever the opportunity presents itself. If there is a race nearby and she doesn’t participate, she feels guilty.

By nature I am not a fan of resolutions. I have watched resolutions, even amongst the most diligent and resolute, get broken more frequently than the national deficit ceiling. Having said that, we at ZAP have decided this year to come up with a series of resolutions we are bound and determined to follow to the letter. At the suggestion of one of our athletes, we have decided to share these resolutions with our friends in Running Journal country.

For the past few years, my 5K times were hovering around 26 minutes. And at age 59, I figured they couldn’t go anywhere but up, i.e. get slower. Then I surprised myself by running in the low 25s this fall and finally a 24:38 on a fast Myrtle Beach course in October. With no changes in my training!

After a pleasant drive up Monte Sano Mountain, we entered the magnificent old stone Monte Sano State Park Lodge banquet room to the beautiful, soothing music of Shirley Hardy playing the harp. After a short period of socializing while all arrived, the more than 100 members and guests attending the 27th Annual Huntsville (AL) Track Club Awards Banquet were treated to a superb spaghetti dinner gratis of the HTC. The music and food had set the mood for a wonderful evening of award presentations.

Youth running program tied to Let's Move Miami campaign

Running USA wire
MIAMI - Middle School students throughout the Dade County School system have begun training in the 2011 ING Run For Something Better® program, which will conclude Sunday, January 30 with more than 5,000 kids participating in a 1.2 mile-run as part of ING Miami Marathon and Half-Marathon® festivities.

The ING Run For Something Better is aligning with First Lady Michelle Obama's Let's Move! national campaign, which hopes to solve the challenge of childhood obesity within a generation so that children born today will reach adulthood at a healthy weight. That initiative involves diet and exercise such as training for the ING Run For Something Better. The local initiative, called Let's Move Miami, runs though February 22.
