The Saga of Savannah’s Strider the Cat and His Rescuer

cat.jpgSAVANNAH, GA — It was a sunny morning in October 2015 when Adam Saxe and two running friends, Casey and Nicole, were on a morning run at Lake Mayer.

There was a sound "like a bird in distress,” Saxe said.

It was a six-week-old orange kitten abandoned by his family.

That was the beginning of the Strider the Cat, who was recently interviewed in the Savannah Striders running club newsletter about his hobbies, but more on that in a bit.

“I picked him up, full of fleas and knocked on some doors to see if he had escaped,” Saxe remembered. “There were no other cats around. I couldn’t leave him there so we walked back to my car, him purring all the way, put him in a box and brought him home. After a few good flea baths and a vet exam, we were hooked.” As a kitten, he fit right in with two other cats in the household.

Saxe, a 50-year-old attorney in Savannah, and his wife, Tina, are both members of “the number one running club on the planet — the Savannah Striders.”

Saxe began running in 2014 for health reasons. This October he plans to run his first marathon in Portland, Oregon.

Oh, the legend of Strider the Cat? Well, Saxe and Tina took him to some some post run breakfasts to meet everyone, thus began the official relationship.

“Now, almost two years later, his favorite spot to sleep is in my basket of clean running clothes.”
