Regional Race Report: Asbury Park 5K (NJ)

August 11, 2008 from Penny Hinck and Jim Robbins (ASBURY PARK, NJ) With cooperation from the Jersey Shore Running Club, Shore Athletic Club and Freehold Area Running Club the Asbury Park Urban Enterprise Zone presented the 5th annual Asbury Park 5K on a perfect, sunny, ideal-racing-weather Saturday morning, August 9, and a record 1001 road racers competed. They raced the 3.1 miles on a two-loop rectangular course that started on the road adjacent to Bradley Park, went south then north and finished on the boardwalk near Convention Hall. The event benefits the Boys' and Girls' Club of Monmouth County.

Toms Rivers' Noel Brock, 30, who can boast of being the women's points leader and reigning champion in the Jersey Shore Golden Grand Prix finished first for the women at this event with a racing time of 16:52. Second to Brock was Clifton's Jenifer Martin, 36 at 17:42 and coming in third for the women was Jenna Jensen, 23, at 17:50, from Salt Lake City, UT. Karen Charles, 35, Spring Lake Heights, 18:24 and Carol Quebe, 22, NYC, 18:27 followed to fill the top five spots.

Kenyan Philip Kiptoo, 31, out of Ringwood, was overall champion at 14:49, followed by Daniel Keoch, 23, also out of Ringwood, at 14:59. The two running mates arrived from Kenya just days ago to begin a circuit of premier road race quests. Finishing out the top Asbury 5K positions were Joey Wiegner, 26, Ivyland, PA, 15:02, Timothy Mulligan, 27, Whiting, 15:10, and Tyrel Jensen, 25, Marlboro, 15:16.

More than $2,500 in prize money was awarded at the event in open and age-group categories. The Asbury Park 5K is the fourth event of the five race Jersey Shore Golden Grand Prix which ties together the top shore summer races: the Spring Lake 5, the Sheehan Classic, the Belmar 5, Asbury Park, and the new Pier Village 5k In Long Branch which concludes the Golden Grand Prix on Labor Day Monday, September 1. As part of the Grand Prix, points are also awarded toward overall grand prix standings.

Kids' races, part of the Jersey Shore Kids' Grand Prix, held with support from the Friends of the Spring Lake Five, followed the main event and featured various distances for children ranging from ages 1 to 12.
