05_ingnycmarathonmed09_0.gifNEW YORK, N.Y. – New York Road Runners have announced a partnership with MapMyRun to present the ING New York Marathon Virtual Running Events, an effort to deliver runners across the globe an opportunity to participate in the experience of ING New York City Marathon Race Week. For each virtual running event, runners will be able to submit their race distance and time at the ING New York City Marathon Virtual Run Event website and see how they finished against other runners—both those who competed virtually, and those who ran in the live event.

“The ING New York City Marathon is one of the world’s premier road races and a unique cultural event,” said Ann Wells Crandall, senior vice president of business development and marketing strategy for New York Road Runners. “We are excited to partner with MapMyRun to share the excitement of Race Week with runners and non-runners across the globe through our Virtual Running Events.”

The ING New York Marathon Virtual Running Events give runners two opportunities to virtually participate:
• The Poland Spring Marathon Kickoff Virtual 5 Mile Run on Friday to Sunday, October 23-25, 2009
• The ING New York City Marathon Virtual 3 Mile - 26.2 Mile Run on Sunday, to Tuesday November 1-3, 2009

To participate in either event, runners register on-line, map out qualifying distances on MapMyRun.com, run their courses within the designated dates, and upload their race data to the event website manually or using an approved device. Post-race, they can check back with the ING New York Marathon Virtual Running Events Web site to view their “Virtual Run” results and see how they stacked up against other competitors—virtual and live. All runners who compete in one or both of the runs will have a chance to win a trip to New York City to watch the ING New York City Marathon 2010 and a chance to win a six month weekend subscription to the New York Times. Also, the first 1,000 runners who register for both events will receive a guaranteed entry into the 2010 NYC Half-Marathon. New York Road Runner’s members will receive one qualifying race credit towards the ING New York City Marathon 2010.

“At MapMyRun, our goal is to help people achieve more active and healthier lifestyles, and we believe that partnering with the New York Road Runners to stage these virtual running events moves us closer to that objective by motivating runners around the worlds to get up off the couch and take part in some fantastic ING NYC Marathon race week events,” states Robin Thurston, CEO of MapMyFitness, Inc.
