Masland, Hutchins Win Grandfather Mountain Marathon

gmm_new_marathon_logo.jpgLINVILLE, NC — Caleb Masland, 36, of Boone, won the historic 50th anniversary Grandfather Mountain Marathon on Saturday, July 8, finishing the rugged 26.2 miles in 2:53:14. Matt Longworth, 36, of Wadesboro was second in 3:07:06.1, followed by Caleb Critcher, 33, of Deep Gap, in 3:09:10.4.

Suzanne Hutchins, 37, of Gastonia, was the female winner in 3:13:45.8. Mary Michaels, 33, of Moody, AL, was second in 3:25:13.5. Danielle Soroka-Jones of Salisbury was third in 3:42:59.3.

The race began at Appalachian State University in Boone on the track at Kidd Brewer Stadium. Runners ran a tough, rolling course in the Blue Ridge Mountains, over the Blue Ridge Parkway, with the last half of the race basically uphill. The event ended at MacRae Meadows during the Scottish Highland Games, which annually draws thousands of visitors, most with Scot lineage, to witness athletic competitions and enjoy the bagpipes and Scottish music.
