Atlantan Herbst-Lucke edges De Reuck to win women's Masters race

By Bill Stewart

ATLANTA - (July 4, 2008) - The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Peachtree Road Race provided yet another exciting chapter to its storied history for its 39th edition. Along with a new finish, two new winners Terefe Maregu of Ethiopia and Nataliya Berkut of Ukraine were crowned on a humid morning in Atlanta, Georgia. Even the native countries of the winners were somewhat new to Peachtree which has been traditionally dominated by runners from Kenya. Behind the super fast were 55,000 runners of varying speeds celebrating the 4th of July as part of an Atlanta annual tradition.

The men's race was a very crowded affair through 3 miles until Atlanta's version of Heartbreak Hill parsed the leaders down to 8 runners. That group composed of four Kenyans and four Ethiopians was led by Leonard Maina, who was responsible for the big push up the hill but would later fade to sixth place. Within that group, a confident Maregu, 25, was biding his time. That time came in the last mile, where using the change in finish to his advantage he charged up the last hill and opened up a gap on runner-up Peter Kamais of Kenya. Maregu would go on to win by a scant four seconds in 28 minutes, 30 seconds over the 10K (6.2 mile) course. In receiving his award, Maregu, commented that he had felt convinced he could win the race even as far back as the three mile point.

The women's race unfolded in much the same way. At mile three, a large pack of women was broken apart by hard uphill running. By four miles, two runners Berkut and Ashu Kasim of Ethiopia had separated themselves from a large chase pack. Neither runner would give in until the last half mile where, like Maregu, Berkut, 33, was able to use a planned burst up the last uphill section to break away for a decisive thirteen second victory and win in 32:23.

The women's Masters race proved to the closest of the day with a nearly photo finish separating first place Atlantan Stephanie Herbst-Lucke and runner-up Colleen De Reuck. Herbst, 42, related that she had been behind from the first mile and slowly worked her way through the field but still had fifteen meters to make up with the finish line fast approaching. Timing her finishing kick perfectly, Herbst-Lucke was able to pass four-time Olympian De Reuck mere meters before crossing the finish line in 33:57. In doing so, she not only won the Master's division but also was first American (with De Reuck second) and first Georgian for an unprecedented triple crown.

The men's Masters race was not nearly so close as Sean Wade of Houston was able to win by twenty-one seconds in 31:24 over Eric Ashton of South Carolina.

Next year, Peachtree will celebrate its landmark 40th running, with a hopeful return to its traditional Piedmont Park finish.
