Josh Whitehead wins Rocket City Marathon

_0624.JPGLocal runner, Josh Whitehead, 35, led the 37th annual Rocket City Marathon on Dec. 14 in Huntsville, AL. Whitehead, 35, of Madison finished in 2:27:25. Brian Shelton, 34, of Cookeville, TN, was second in 2:28:59. Justin Leach, 26, of Birmingham ran 2:34:28 for third, while J. Penny, 26, of Johnson City, TN, was fourth in 2:36:21. Mark Paulson, 26, of of Georgetown, KY, was fifth in 2:38:33.

In the women's race, Justyne Mudy, 29, of Rome, GA, repeated as champion, running 2:46:36, finishing 14th overall. Kimberlie Meeker, 33, of Rome, GA, was second in 2:51:48 with Kay Anne Starosciak, 40, of Canton, GA, third in 2:58:31. Elena Linn, 27 of Vestavia, AL, was close behind for fourth (2:58:55) while Blair Burnette, 27, of Nashville, TN, was fifth in 3:06:44.

Matt Pulle, 41, of Nashville, TN, was the male masters winner in 2:40:36. Scott Colford, 43, of Logansport, IN, was second, running 2:42:31 and Scott Jansky, 40, of Two Rivers, WI, took third in 2:43:27.

Third-place female, Kaye Anne Starosciak, also led the female masters, with Meredith Smith, of Ashland City, TN, second in 3:15:49. Shannon Carson, 45, of Pearl, MS, was third in 3:31:10.

Rain let up just before the start of the race, leaving only a light drizzle at the start. Next year's Rocket City Marathon will feature a newly designed course and a larger race field.

Larry Marett of Amory, MS, celebrated his 75th birthday by finishing second in his new age group in 4:57:22.

The Rocket City Marathon is part of the Running Journal Grand Prix and runners scoring on the series earn double points for the marathon.
