Joe Kane, Sarah Heins Win Mulberry Island Half Marathon

FORT EUSTIS, VA — Joe Kane, 30, of Alexandria won the 36th Annual Mulberry Island Half Marathon on Saturday in 1:22:54. Second male was John Piggott, 52, of Williamsburg, in 1:27:09. Third male was Doug Fernandez, 57, of Richmond, in 1:27:18.

For the Women in the Half Marathon, first went to Sarah Heins, 21, of Wilmington, DE, with a time of 1:24:41, who finished second overall in the event. Second woman was Tressas Breindel, 39, of Richmond, in 1:29:18 with third going to Christin Hoffstadt, 26, of Norfolk, in 1:30:50.

The Mulberry Island Half Marathon is the 9th and longest race of the 12-race 2017 Peninsula Track Club Grand Prix. It was also one of the fifteen races in the Hampton Roads Super Grand Prix put on jointly by the Tidewater Striders, Colonial Road Runners and Peninsula Track Club.

In the 5K, first place overall for the men was Victor Flemming, 38, of Smithfield, with a time of 16:30. Second place went to Stacin Martin, 48, of Chesapeake, in 17:54, followed by Raphael Kimanga, 35 of Fort Eustis, VA, in 18:11.

For the Women in the 5K, Ashley Chitwood, 20 of Dodgeville, WI, was first with a time of 23:39, followed by Angelica Reese, 34, of Newport News, in 23:46. Third female was Leslie Sampedro, 35, in 23:50.
