flanagan.jpgNEW YORK — Shanlane was determined at age 36, running her first marathon this year and, yes, finished first in the New York City Marathon. She was the first American female runner to win the famed marathon in 40 years, finishing in 2:26:53.

Favorite Mary Keitany of Kenya was second. Keitany had won the race for the past three years and set the world record of 2:17:01 in a women-only marathon this year at London.

Flanagan finished strong, pulled away over the final three miles, leading by nearly a half-minute with a mile left in the race.

Kenyan Geoffrey Kamworor was the male winner in an unofficial 2:10:53. Countryman Wilson Kipsang was second.

More than 50,000 runners were in the marathon, which was run with tightened police security following a recent terrorist attack in New York City that claimed eight lives.
