hiltonhead.jpegThe Road Runners Club of America (RRCA), the oldest and largest national association of running organizations, has selected the Hilton Head Island Marathon as the RRCA South Carolina State Marathon Championship for the second consecutive year. The Road Runners Club of America has dedicated itself to growing the sport of running since 1958. "This is a huge honor for us to receive this two years in a row from such a prestigious organization. It is a testament to the hard work and coordination by so many agencies and volunteers," said Mark Weisner, race director.

RRCA membership includes running clubs, training programs, running events, runners, walkers, coaches, sponsors, and supporters. The goal of the RRCA Championship Event Series is to shine a spotlight on well-run events and to award top performing runners in the open, masters (40+), grand masters (50+), and senior grand masters (60+) categories for both men and women. Overall male and female winners in each of these categories will receive RRCA Marathon Championship awards.

The 2018 Publix Hilton Head Island Marathon, Half Marathon & 8K will take place on Saturday, February 10th at 8:00am. Runners will depart from Jarvis Creek Park and follow a course that will take them on the Cross Island Parkway, through several parks, numerous neighborhoods and over Broad Creek. Both The Marathon and Half Marathon will feature all standard male and female divisions.

"The Hilton Head Marathon, which is a a 'Boston Qualifier', continues to grow and we expect a record number of runners this year. The course is fast and flat except for the bridge crossings over the Broad Creek, which is challenging but also very beautiful. The Marathon is a great off-season event for the Island filling hotel rooms and restaurants. It also raises money for many local charities” explained Weisner.

Publix Marathon Race Day will also feature an 8K Run and Children's Fun Run. Over 1,200 runners of all ages are expected to compete in the three events.

Participants receive a colorful long sleeve tech T-shirt plus all Marathon, Half Marathon and 8K finishers receive a unique finishers medal. The Sonesta Resort & Spa will host a Race Expo and Packet Pick-Up on Friday, February 9th.

The Hilton Head Island Marathon, Half Marathon & 8K will benefit many local charities including The Hilton Head Rotary Club, Hilton Head High School Athletics, Hilton Head Christian Academy, Bluffton High School ROTC, May River High School National Honor Society Advisor, and others. In fifteen years, the event has raised over $52,000 for local charities.
