VIRGINIA BEACH – Hampton Roads runners and walkers kicked off their St. Patrick’s Day celebrations with the first events of the Yuengling Shamrock Marathon Weekend Saturday morning. Nearly 12,000 participants enjoyed the TowneBank Shamrock 8K, Operation Smile Shamrock Final Mile, and Leprechaun Dash at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront.

The morning began with the TowneBank Shamrock 8K, which also served as the USA Track & Field (USATF) Masters 8 km Championships. Harrison Toney, 24, of Harrisonburg, Virginia, broke the tape for the men in 25:09. Two masters runners rounded out the top three men; 41-year-old David Angell of Blue Ridge, Virginia, (25:39) and 40-year-old Giovanni Pipia of Kennesaw, Georgia (25:45).

For the women, it was a close finish in the TowneBank Shamrock 8K. Lindsay Carrick, 25, of Emerald Isle, North Carolina, finished first in 29:18. Kerri Dalton, 22 (Harrisonburg, Virginia), crossed the finish line just behind Carrick in 29:23. Rachel Northup, 42 (Richmond, VA), placed third overall and won the women’s division of the USATF Masters 8 km Championships in 30:15.

“As the host of the 2018 USATF Masters 8 km Championships, we were delighted to see our masters runners provide tough competition to the overall field,” said Jerry Frostick, co-owner of J&A Racing. “From avid runners to those beginning their health and fitness journey, we celebrated the finishers of the TowneBank Shamrock 8K at our post-race party on the beach.”

The day continued with two youth events: The sold-out Operation Smile Shamrock Final Mile and the Leprechaun Dash. The events provide children the chance to experience the excitement of race day in a safe environment.

“It is so important to instill healthy habits early and get kids moving,” said Amy Frostick, co-owner of J&A Racing. “The youth events during the Yuengling Shamrock Weekend allow us to show children that running is fun and crossing a finish line is a great accomplishment.”

The 2018 Yuengling Shamrock Marathon Weekend continued Sunday, March 18 with the Marathon, Marathon Relay and Half Marathon. For more information and complete results, visit
