TAMPA, Fla. – The IRONMAN Foundation® has launched a Humanitarian Relief Effort campaign to raise funds in response to the Kilauea Volcanic Eruption on the Island of Hawai`i. As part of their Humanitarian Relief Effort campaign, the IRONMAN Foundation has pledged $50,000 to support local recovery efforts.

The IRONMAN World Championship takes place each year on the west side of the Island of Hawai`i in Kailua-Kona. While damage has been isolated to an area of Kilauea Pu‘u ‘Ō‘ō in the lower east side of the island in Puna, the IRONMAN `Ohana is dedicated to helping our neighbors on the island.

Since May 3, the lower eastern side of the Island of Hawai`i has suffered multiple natural disasters, including the largest earthquake to hit the region in over four decades as well as volcanic eruption, and lava flows which have reached over 100 acres of land. Homes have been destroyed and displaced over a thousand residents.

“Our thoughts are with our neighbors on the lower eastern side of the island in Puna who continue to be impacted by these events,” said Sarah Hartmann, acting Executive Director for the IRONMAN Foundation. “We are calling upon our IRONMAN communities to join us in helping to bring relief to this part of the Island of Hawai`i in their time of need. The areas affected will require ongoing assistance and donations are critically important for relief and recovery efforts.”

To help raise additional funds for those in need, the IRONMAN Foundation has set up a page to collect donations for this cause. In addition, information on volunteer opportunities will be forthcoming. Preparation for the 2018 FinisherPix IRONMAN 70.3 Hawai`i triathlon set for June 2 has not been impacted and the event remains as scheduled.
