GOLD HILL, NC — An 1800s narrow-gauge railroad line used in gold mining operations is now the Gold Hill Rail Trail and will be utilized during the first Historic Gold Rush 5K on Saturday, Oct. 21. Crushed gravel and woodland paths make up most of the course. A fun run for those 12-under will also be held.

Along the 5K will be history sites, including former gold mines. The finish line will be in the center of the early mining village, which was very active in the 1840s.

Proceeds benefit the Historic Gold Hill and Mines Foundation and rail trail maintenance. The Gold Hill Rail Trail is a protected railroad right of way developed by the Land Trust for Central North Carolina in partnership with the Historic Gold Hill and Mines Foundation, Inc. The rail line transported gold, gold refining equipment and supplies to and from the mines.

Online registration is available at https://www.sportoften.com/event/48637/gold-rush-5k and a printable brochure is available at www.salisburyrowanrunners.org.
