Billy Mills at Galloway Half

ATLANTA — Olympic Champion Billy Mills will keynote the 2017 Jeff Galloway Half Marathon Weekend, which will be held Dec. 15-17. Mills pulled one of the greatest upsets in Olympic history at the 1964 Tokyo Games when, as a virtual unknown, he upset the favorites in a mad dash to the finish.

Mills was the first American to win the Olympic 10,000 meter event. An American Indian, Mills is a member of the Oglala Lakota (Sioux) Tribe. He is the founder of the nonprofit Running Strong for American Indian Youth. He was a First Lieutenant in the Marine Corps Reserve when he competed in the 1964 Olympics.

Mills had qualified second in the American Olympic Trials for the 10,000 meters and his time was more than a minute slower than the Olympic Games favorite, world record holder Ron Clarke of Australia.
