Mayor of Atlanta among 60,000 Running and Walking to Kick off the Fourth

Bernard and Stephanie by Warren Travers.jpgATLANTA – July 4, 2018 – For the 49th consecutive year, Atlanta began its Fourth of July on Peachtree, as 60,000 runners and walkers converged on a humid summer day to finish the AJC Peachtree Road Race. With the Peachtree playing host to the USATF 10km Championships for the second consecutive year, the first men and women to finish, Bernard Lagat (Tucson, AZ) and Stephanie Bruce (Flagstaff, AZ), were crowned national champions.

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA — Participants at the Humana Rock ’N’ Roll Virginia Beach Half Marathon will get free entry in the American Music Festival the same weekend (Aug. 31-Sept. 2). Half marathon runners get free entry all three days (Friday-Sunday), 5K runners get free entry on Saturday.

The American Music Festival will bring in acts such as ZZ Top, Goo Goo Dolls, Ziggy Marley, and SOJA.

Also featured during the weekend is a Health & Fitness Expo, which will be open on Friday, Aug. 31, from 1-7 p.m. and on Saturday, Sept. 1, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Virginia Beach Convention Center.

Entertainment will also include bands on the race courses.

The 35th annual Road Race Management Race Directors’ Meeting and Trade Exhibit will take place in St. Petersburg, FL, Nov. 8 – 10. The meeting offers sessions on critical topics for running event directors and officials, along with networking opportunities and a chance for event directors to shop for equipment and service needs at the Trade Exhibit.

Boston Marathon champion and two-time Olympian Des Linden will race the 2018 TCS New York City Marathon on Sunday, November 4, making her second appearance at the event after finishing in fifth place in 2014. Linden, who earlier this year became the first American to win the women's open division at the Boston Marathon in 33 years.

"Breaking the tape at this year's Boston Marathon was a lifelong dream come true," Linden said. "At the moment, it felt like it was the culmination of my career, but I believe I still have plenty more to give to the marathon. I'm thrilled to head to the TCS New York City Marathon this fall. I'm motivated to get back on the big stage that NYRR will undoubtedly put together and intend to make a name for myself in another great city.”

Club Unveils New Identity for City at Peachtree Health & Fitness Expo

ATLANTA – Atlanta Track Club has declared Atlanta as Running City USA. In an unveiling at the Peachtree Health & Fitness Expo ahead of the 49th AJC Peachtree Road Race, the Club launched its new campaign and staked Atlanta’s claim as one of the country’s top running and walking destinations.

“We believe this is Running City USA,” said Atlanta Track Club Executive Director Rich Kenah. “Between the history of the AJC Peachtree Road Race, our 29,000 member-strong organization, the 125,000 people who finish Atlanta Track Club races each year, a thriving youth running community and the future of Atlanta’s pedestrian infrastructure, there’s no better place in this country to be a runner or walker.”

Sparks, Moore Win 10K

ASHLAND, KY — Eric Sparks won the Summer Motion 10K in 37:38. Missy Moore was female winner in 40:41 in the Saturday, June 30 event.
Second and third overall finishers were Grant Chaffin (39:48) and Jack Ditty (40:28).

In the 5K, Jacob Nakamura was the winner in 18:10, followed by Scott Hamm (18:39) and Jake Crawford (20:43). Female winner was Saige Foster in 24:44.

Harvey Lewis Expected to Finish 2,198 Mile Journey in 46 Days on July 14.

RoadID_Harvey_275x275.jpgCOVINGTON, KY – Harvey Sweetland Lewis has covered many miles of the Appalachian Trail since May 30, and is nearing record setting pace to arrive in Mount Katahdin, Maine on July 14.

This Fastest Known Time (FKT) has become one of the most contested, coveted accolades in ultra running and has been broken in recent years by Scott Jurek and Carl Metzler. Joe “Stringbean” McConaughy set the current record last summer in 45 days, 12 hours and 15 minutes. Harvey’s support team has been led by his 78-year-old dad and includes countless friends, family, fellow ultra runners and strangers who have been encouraging him along the trail and on social media. ROAD iD has joined Harvey to document his journey.
