For the second year in a row, I was fortunate enough to attend the USA Track & Field Podium Education Project in Las Vegas in December. For those who remember my winter column a year ago, you remember the P.E.P. brings together top coaches from around the country and around the world to present their latest research as well as trial and error based coaching lessons from their athletes who have either seen the Olympic podium or are currently seeking that podium.

Mention the word “hypnosis” and many people conjure up images of an elderly, bearded psychologist using a pocket watch to put an unsuspecting subject into a trance and then getting the subject to do anything the psychologist wants, like robbing a bank or carrying out elaborate schemes to overthrow governments.

Like many of you, I spent a few hours in August in front of the television watching the Summer Olympics from Beijing. While my natural bias was towards Track and Field, I also marveled at Michael Phelps’s accomplishments in the pool, the perfection of the Chinese divers, the United States victories in men’s and women’s basketball and countless other winners in such sports as Field Hockey, Table Tennis, Team Handball, Rowing, and Judo.
