Our recipe!
Jambalaya, Gumbo, Shrimp, Oysters, Crawfish, Crabs, Alligator Sauce Piquant!

NOTC 2-gw007.jpgMix all that in with an annual long, hot, sweltering summer. Then add in the occasional hurricane. Five years ago we endured the most devastating natural (or in south Louisiana we say “man made”) disaster in U.S. history, followed by perhaps the largest oil spill in U.S. history and we’re still here. Yes indeed, can’t sink us if you tried.

Recently the results were published from a USA Track and Field-sponsored clinical trial, that sought to answer the question whether stretching before running increases the risk of injury. Close to 1,400 volunteers completed the study, after being randomly assigned to either perform a specified pre-run stretching routine or no pre-run stretching at all, for a three month period. When a volunteer was sidelined from their usual running routine for three days or more, it was counted as an injury.

“Y’all sound like a team of draft horses,” shouted my college track coach. He was referring to me and my two fellow freshman distance runner teammates as we completed a 440 on the Furman University track. Certainly we did not sparkle in comparison to our All-American triple jump teammate, a junior.

(Editor’s note: On Dec. 10-11, the Florida Striders will have a 100-runner relay, each running a 5K, in an attempt to break the world record. They have to beat 40 hours, an average of 24 minutes for each 5K. Last year, they broke the world record for the 100x10K in a time of 77 hours, 17 FloridaStriders2.jpgminutes, 25 seconds.)

The 100 runners for the 100x5K World Record Attempt have been selected -- and what a group of runners it is.

For some of us, running in the dark is a necessity. The manufacturers of technical apparel and accessories have gone a long way to provide us with 360-degree reflectivity, high number of candle power on our apparel and footwear, blinking lights for better visibility or better sight. As a specialty store, we have many options to keep you visible during your runs when the sun is down.

Robert Preston got to pick his race number and chose number 57 because it was his 57th marathon.

The Athens, Tennessee Chamber of Commerce executive director had traveled to Arkansas to run in the Arkansas Marathon in Booneville, adding another state to his list as he attempts to run a marathon in all 50 states by age 50. That’s nine years from now and he has 31 more to go.
