In the 1987 New York City Marathon, Priscilla Welsh stunned the world by being the overall female winner in a time of 2:30:17, at the age of 42. At that time it was virtually unheard of that a masters runner would take the overall crown in a major road race. We all assumed that as we reached our late 30s, our race times would start to slowly deteriorate, and that after we turned 40, we would no longer have the ability to compete on a level field with younger runners.

Ludwig.jpgIn 1978…back when I started running, I was an avid reader of Racing South, a modest periodical promoting running in the southeast. In time, the periodical would evolve into The Running Journal, the monthly newsletter with which you are all familiar. Over the past 32 years I can honestly say that I’ve read every single issue of both publications.

In 2007 Brian Boyle competed in his first Ironman triathlon and finished in a time of 14 hours and 42 minutes. Two weeks ago (Nov. 6) in Florida he dropped over 4.5 hours when he finished his third Ironman in a time of 10 hours and 14 minutes. With limited recovery, this past Saturday (Nov. 20) he competed in his first ultramarathon/trail event when he ran in the JFK 50 Mile, which is the oldest ultramarathon in the country. Due to the very technical terrain and also the endurance needed to run to course, some don’t even make it to the finish line - Brian finished in 9:50:16.
