Houston Marathon Committee

spangler.jpgWith a U.S. Olympic Trials Marathon record $250,000 prize purse and U.S. Olympic team spots on the line, Jenny Spangler, 32, who came to the Trials with just the 61st-fastest qualifying time, surprised the field and herself with a stunning victory in 2:29:54, nearly a three-minute personal record and just 4 seconds from the Trials record, over a challenging course.

With the fastest U.S. Junior marathon time (2:33:52 from 1983), Spangler, from Gurnee, IL, showed promise, but injuries and disappointments prevented her from reaching her potential until that wonderful day in Columbia when everything came together for her.

By ROY HERRON, Tennessee state senator, Dresden, TN
I had decided not to run the New York City Marathon in 2001. Then came September 11.

Roy Herron.jpgThat morning a friend told me to turn on the television, and I watched as the second jetliner crashed into the World Trade Center. Like millions around the world, I was stunned. With three young sons, my wife and I strictly limit television time. But on September 11 and for several days following, the television stayed on almost constantly.

Like many, I thought the New York City Marathon might be canceled. But when plans for the marathon went forward, I felt I had to go. As much as the terrorists’ acts and the media coverage had affected my children, shouldn’t I show our sons we were not giving in to the terrorists or to our own fears?

WAR.JPGThe Western Arkansas Runners in Fort Smith, Arkansas, now has its own building and a 5K course. The 3,000 square foot building was donated to the club by the Fort Chaffee Redevelopment Authority. The club also has 50 parking spaces and its own running course.

The donation was made under the expectation that the club will host running events and continue to promote the active lifestyle on the campus of the former military base that is being developed into a recreational, residential, and industrial center.

The clubhouse is known as the “WAR Room” and is perfectly situated near the main 5K running loop that has become popular with runners seeking low-traffic, safe and scenic course, reports Jeremy Maxwell, club president.

You can help him reach his dreams

Michael Murray.jpgMichael Murray is a gifted 20-year-old runner from Nashville, TN, who ran 4:18 in the 1500 meters in the world championships in New Zealand this year.

He was born with an intellectual disability but that has not stopped him from his Olympic dreams. At an early age, a team of doctors and psychologists determined he was severely language impaired.

“At the age of eight, Michael began running track,” his mother, Kathryn Murray Mays, related. “He began running in the local Special Olympic meets. Just one problem, they were running for fun, he was running to win, and did.

By Teri Saylor

Teri Saylor photo.jpgAfter a lifelong fear of running, my fear of middle-age spread scared me more, and I joined the Galloway Marathon Training program in Raleigh, NC.

My disbelieving friends and family shook their heads and diagnosed me with a profound mental illness despite my insistence that I would never run a marathon.

But the day I completed a 16-mile training run, I began to agree that I might, indeed, be crazy for running all of those miles without having a goal.

By Richard Ferguson
Ferguson,_Richard.jpg__.jpgThink back to the time when you first began running. Was there one particular individual who you really admired that served as a type of role model to get you started running? Is there anyone today that you look up to in your running and who you really feel is a positive influence on your running? I’m sure most of you can think of such role models you’ve had in the past and today. For most runners role models have played a very important part in their running careers.
