TALLAHASSEE, Florida – Emily Infeld outlasted Molly Seidel to win the senior women’s race, while Leonard Korir outkicked fellow Olympian Galen Rupp to repeat as senior men’s champion at the USATF Cross Country Championships in Tallahassee, Florida Saturday, the first stop on the 2018 USATF Running Circuit.

Under partly cloudy skies and temperatures hovering around 50 degrees, the senior women’s race got underway, as a pack of eight runners quickly positioned themselves at the front of the field, taking charge of the early pacing duties.

Led by the quartet of Molly Seidel, Bowerman Track Club teammates Emily Infeld and Courtney Frerichs, as well as USATF Running Circuit veteran Stephanie Bruce, the top pack maintained an even cadence throughout the first half of the 10 km race.

jean.jpgHey, Chicken Little, the sky is not falling! Yes we know numbers of participants have dipped in the last few years. The number of races being produced annually has dropped off since 2015. Shoe sales are not as strong as they were in 2014. But, let’s consider a few things as we look towards the future.

Fewer events being produced is not a bad thing. Poorly organized events have been erased from the market as runners get smarter about selecting their events. Event producers that only care about massive profits, and not about the runner experience, have closed-up shop.

Are You Training Your Gut?

Runners tend to do a good job of training their muscles, heart and lungs. But some of them (particularly marathoners and ultra-runners) commonly fail to train their gut. As one marathoner reported, "I was so afraid of getting diarrhea during long training runs that I did not eat or drink anything beforehand. I really struggled after 14 miles..." A high school athlete admitted, "I'm so afraid I'll throw up if I run with food in my stomach." He ate only a light lunch at 11:00 and then practiced on fumes at 3:30. No wonder he had a disappointing season.

An estimated 30-50% of endurance athletes (including up to 90% of distance runners) have experienced gastro-intestinal (GI) issues during and after hard exercise. They fear bloat, gas, nausea, stomach cramps/pain, side stitch, diarrhea, vomiting, and urge to defecate. These issues arise during long bouts of exercise because blood flow to the gut is reduced for an extended period of time.
