Brown.jpgWill Brown of Raleigh, NC, recognized as one of the Marine Corps Marathon (MCM) beloved Groundpounders, has announced his retirement from running the Marine Corps Marathon after having participated in “The People’s Marathon” for 42 consecutive years. The 71-year-old Brown made his final run during the 42nd MCM on Sunday, Oct. 22.

The Groundpounders were a select few who had officially completed every year of the event. By 40th MCM in 2015, only Brown and Al Richmond of Arlington, VA remained MCM Groundpounders.

Brown completed his 40th consecutive MCM and then returned to run the 41st MCM in 2016 but did not complete the 26.2-mile course. That resulted in Richmond being the only Groundpounder.

By Carolyn Mather
Over the past 20-plus years, I have written various articles about training for the marathon or for any distance event. I thought I would share a few of my insights attained from my 132 marathon completions and 40 years of distance running. There is really is no magic about the marathon. Training for the marathon is a BIG DEAL! It is mentally and physically tough and so much can go wrong in the race. Failing to plan effectively with all of the details is often the downfall of a marathoner. The major goal and the only thing that counts is finishing, so you must do your best to see that your goal is accomplished. To do this practice is a vital component of planning.

RALEIGH, NC (Oct. 25) -- The sound of bagpipes filled the air just before the whistle blew to launch the Kids 1000 meter race off the starting line, kicking off the inaugural Raleigh City Cross Country Championship at Dix Park. The event was a joint venture between Sir Walter Running, the City of Raleigh, Raleigh Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department, and Dix Park.

The event also launched the "Big Field Mile," a temporary mile loop around the Big Field at Dix Park. The launch was a part of the iDEA Raleigh Campaign, with the goal of activating Dix Park. The "Big Field Mile" has neon green posts every 100 meters, and can be run either clockwise, or counter clockwise, as it is marked both ways, with Strava segments to match.
