chris.jpgHUNTSVILLE, AL — There are many amazing memories I have from a recent Kenya Relief church mission trip to Migori, Africa, but one of the neatest was holding a 5K run for 125 boys and girls 8,500 miles away. Talk about a long-distance run!

I had talked to my close friend and former newspaper buddy Curtis Coughlan, who is a Kenya Relief missionary in Migori with his wife, Devry, about putting on a 5K run for the kids who live at Brittany’s Home of Grace Orphanage and attend the Kenya Relief Academy. Curtis, like me, loved the idea because he and I have always enjoyed running to stay in shape. Going to Kenya, one of the world’s hotbeds for great long-distance runners, I figured it would be something the kids would enjoy doing.

A new study by a duo of Brigham Young University (BYU) professors, Iain Hunter and U.S. Olympian Jared Ward, finds the stride length people naturally choose is the best for them, whether they are experienced or inexperienced runners. That means whatever shape you are in -- marathon warrior or weekend jogger -- stick with what you're doing.

"Don't worry about changing your stride length," said Hunter, a professor of exercise science at BYU. "You should just leave it alone or you're going to use more energy in the end."

The study, published in the International Journal of Exercise Science, measured the energy use of 33 runners while carrying out various strides during a 20-minute run. Of those runners, 19 were experienced runners (meaning they averaged at least 20 miles a week) while 14 were inexperienced runners (people who have never run more than 5 miles in a week).

IMG_2430 2.JPG I have a new running partner — she makes sure I get out of bed in the morning, reminds me to appreciate being in nature, and is happy to run as far as I want to. Morgan is younger than me, but she’s great company.

Kipsang_WilsonLeds1-Berlin16-thumb-500x750-25880.jpgWilson Kipsang has been to hell and back. A world record holder, and then, his world record went to someone else. Kipsang battles Eliud KIpchoge and runs fine races, but Kipchoge got him. Then, his battle with Kenenisa Bekele, where he nearly broke Bekele twice and Bekele took the win, pushing Kipsang to a new marathon PB, that was faster than his former WR, but he took second.
