Jim_Ryun_1966-0x270-thumb-500x659-24890.jpgFifty years ago on June 23, 1967, Jim Ryun famously broke his own world record in the mile by .02 in Bakersfield, California. USATF and Sacramento Sports Commission take a look back at Ryun's triumph ahead of the 2017 USATF Outdoor Championships, June 22-25, at Sacramento State University.

Jim Ryun was used to setting world records, so his 3:51.1 mile at the 1967 AAU Championships hardly came as a surprise. What surprised him was how effortless it felt.

"It was one of the easiest races of my life," Ryun said. "In fact, I don't ever remember running with such ease."

Unknown.jpegCarolyn Mather wrote this feature on the iconic Grandma's Marathon and Garry Bjorkland Half Marathon. The most popular athlete in the event? Well, none other than Kara Goucher, who ran the half marathon with a sore hamstring. Here's Carolyn's wonderful piece on one of the many races she attends and assists at each year.

By Carolyn Mather for RunBlogRun.com
Race day dawned in the low 60's, but it was humid for Duluth,Minnesota, where the 41st running of Grandmas Marathon took place along with the 27th Garry Bjorklund Half Marathon. 6689 runners started the marathon and 6,377 finished while the half had an incredible 7,336 starters, and 7,332 finishers! The half, which starts at 6:15am, had the most ideal weather, as it did warm a bit for the marathon.
