ATLANTA — From Scott Overall and Ben Payne, who last year battled to the closest finish in race history, to 91-year-old world record-holder Betty Lindberg, the theme of Friday’s kickoff press conference to the AJC Peachtree Road Race was “never give up.”

The largest road race in the U.S. and largest 10K in the world, the AJC Peachtree Road Race will be run for the 47th time on Monday morning, July 4, with approximately 60,000 runners on the start line for what Mary Ford, chair of Atlanta Track Club’s board of directors, called “both a tradition and a destination,” showcasing participants of all ages and abilities.

V4A1405.jpgATLANTA — Betty Lindberg wasn’t out to set a world record. She didn’t even know what it was. At 91, her only plan was to take part in the 800-meter race at Atlanta Track Club’s All Comers meet on May 24, and maybe earn some points in the club’s Grand Prix Series.

Huddle_Molly1b-Pre16-thumb-500x750-17384.jpgWhen Molly Huddle steps to the line of the NYC Marathon in November she will finally be silencing all those pestering her about WHEN she will run a marathon. She will have in all likelihood come straight off of an Olympic showing and into marathon grind mode. She will in all likelihood stun us all with a ridiculously incredible debut. When Molly Huddle races she doesn't do so unless she is ready to race for a win.

Nick Symmonds, the 2013 World Outdoor silver medalist at 800 meters, will be unable to participate in the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials. The 800 meter specialist made the semi-finals in Beijing in 2008, and placed fifth in the World record producing final in London 2012. In 2009, at the World Champs in Berlin, Nick took sixth and in Daegu, Nick Symmonds was fifth in the final. Nick Symmonds cited a high ankel injury, which means, in laymen terms, a torn ligament and a stress fracture. Coach Danny Mackey said it was very hard to watch Nick Symmonds try and run to test the ankle.

Unknown.jpegFor runners at the competitive end of the spectrum, the Olympic Team Trials–Track & Field, held July 1–July 10 in Eugene, OR, represent the culmination of a four-year journey. This system of selecting the U.S. Olympic team from a single meet — and in the case of the 10,000 meters, a single race — certainly ramps up the pressure to perform on a given day.

Kate Murphy - Women’s 3000m winner: “I just love going out there on the track and having fun and working hard. It’s always fun coming out here and competing against the elite girls and getting to connect with them.”

Vincent Crisp - Men’s 800m winner: “I was just thinking that this could possibly be my last race so I tried my all to go get them. I was running 1:49 at the end of this season [collegiate] so 1:46 and new stadium record in one of the biggest meets in the country is amazing.”
