It’s a new year again! Or at least it will be soon when you are reading this. Maybe you have resolutions or specific goals that you want to reach in the New Year, or maybe you just want to stay healthy and injury free. Regardless whether you have resolutions or not, now may be the perfect time to examine how you train, and seek out a few things you can do differently in order to run faster, or at least to keep injuries at bay.

It started almost as a joke. ‘Paula’s Big Butt 50K’ we called it, the perfect way to celebrate the milestone birthday of Paula May, one of the original six members of the Darkside Running Club. It would also be the long overdue first ultramarathon -- informal as it was -- ever held in Peachtree City, Georgia, a running community interconnected by over 90 miles of runnable asphalt golf cart paths.

JACKSONVILLE, FL — At what is called one of the fastest courses in the South, over 100 runners will seek to qualify Sunday, Jan. 3 for the Olympic Trials Marathon.

The event includes the half marathon as one of the last half marathon events that will count for qualifying. Men must run under 1:05 and women under 1:15 to meet the qualifying standard. The Jacksonville Bank Marathon, Half Marathon and 5K races start and finish at The Bolles School. Officials believe the half marathon may be the fastest half ever run in the South.

The marathon course record is 2:14:33. You can qualify for the Boston Marathon in this event.

Lots of shade is offered on the “pancake flat” course, which finishes inside Bolles Stadium on the track. Large medals go to all marathon and half finishers.

-- Enjoy the spirit which propels you. Run for life.
-- Run and smile. Smile = mile with an "s."
-- Compliment the efforts of other runners, don't brag about yourself.
-- Don't run a marathon until you're ready.
-- Thy children shall run for enjoyment with your gentle encouragement.
-- Don't criticize volunteers. They make the race possible.
-- Respect slow runners. It's harder to run slower because it takes longer.
-- Don't drop out. Achievement comes to those who run the full distance.
-- Others may judge you; smile and understand we are all imperfect.
