ludwig.JPG My wife Cindy and I had the opportunity to knock two things off of our mutual Bucket List not long ago when we discovered Neil Young was going to be in concert at the Red Rocks Amphitheater in Morrison, Colorado. Once we found out, it was only a couple of days before flights were booked, reservations were made and concert tickets purchased. It was our first truly spontaneous vacation in all the years we’ve been married.

Hill_RyanQ-Beijing15-thumb-500x750-13304.jpgBeijing, China — Earlier this summer, when Ryan Hill - newly-crowned national 5000 meter champion - appeared in the Hayward Field mixed zone after his unexpected victory, the first question tossed out by the press corps was, "Who are you?" The former North Carolina State graduate patiently rolled out a detailed reply for the media representatives, many of whom had frankly forgotten - or never really knew - that Hill had competed in 2013 World Championships in Moscow, advanced to the final, and finished a respectable 10th.

Traveling in a city and in a language that is totally foreign to one's current existence, is always exciting. Here are my thoughts on my partners in travel, the taxi drivers in Beijing.

I arrived via bus at the Ken Tai Hotel on August 18. After getting my credential in quick fashion, I grabbed a taxi and headed to my hotel.

Not knowing Chinese at all, I found a volunteer who could write Chinese and understand my English, so he prepared a card for me, with English name of Hotel for me and Chinese language for taxi drivers.

BEIJING — A strange and curious 10,000 meters. A pace where no one dropped early, as Yuka Takahashi, JPN, lead the 1000m in 3:13.74, 2000m in 6:27.87. Rei Ohara, Jpn, lead the 3000m in 9:40.47 as all of the contenders were together, with Vivian Cheruiyot, Gelete Burka, Molly Huddle, Shalane Flanagan and Emily Infeld were all there.

What, three Americans, are you delusional?

Nope, all three Americans were there, menacing as the race dawdled.

Rei OHara lead the 4000 meters in 12:54.99, and 5,000 meters in 16:11.99. I remember watching and saying to myself, " Oh, this is a perfect race for Molly Huddle."

BEIJING -- The 15th IAAF World Championships in Athletics got off to a shocking start here as a plucky teenager from Eritrea, Ghirmay Ghebreslassie, became the youngest-ever world marathon champion at 19 years-old.

Farah_MoFH-Lausanne15-thumb-500xauto-12997.jpgBEIJING, CHINA — Mo Farah is at the top of his game now. Even with the media histrionics that he has dealt with this year, Mo can focus like few others and his ability to kick down the pace over the last 1200 meters is second to no one. His win tonight over Geoffrey Kamworor, who has his eyes set on a gold medal over 10,000 meters, was formidable.

Coe_SebPC1-IAAF13-thumb-500xauto-12863.jpgIn a tightly contested election, Seb Coe won his bid for the presidency of the IAAF. His closing words to the IAAF Congress, just prior to the election was that this could be his "last race," and it was up to the Federations.

Now, comes the tough part: governing and affecting change in the world's oldest and greatest sport.
