Can Running Help Stave Off Alzheimer’s?

Over the past several years, my husband and I – like so many folks these days – have had to deal very closely with the dreaded brain deterioration caused by Alzheimer’s Disease. My mother, who passed away in 2012, was in the early stages at the time, and I derived a lot of peace from the fact that she was able to live out her life largely unaffected by what is beginning to look like a dreadful pandemic in our country.

Unfortunately, not long after my mother passed away, my husband’s mother began exhibiting the classic symptoms of the disease. Much to our chagrin, she has since been formally diagnosed and appears to be spiraling down that horrible path.

Kenyan Dennis Kimetto blasted the world marathon record Sunday in Berlin, Germany with a blazing 2:02:57. He smashed the previous record by an amazing 26 seconds.

His time is raising new questions as to the possibility of a sub-2 hour marathon.

Fellow Kenyan Emmanuel Mutai finished second in 2:03:13, also breaking the old world record. Abera Kuma of Ethiopia was third in 2:05:56.

American female Shalane Flanagan, who tried to break the American record, finished third in 2:21:14, a personal best, finishing behind winner Tirfi Tsegaye of Ethiopia, who won the women’s race in 2:20:18. Feyse Tadese, also of Ethiopia, was second in 2:20:27.

Wonderful, Magical, Magnificent Mile

EliteWomen.JPG When I was in college, all freshmen were required to pass a physical education exam that ensured we could swim, tread water or float for 10 minutes and run a 10-minute mile. While I was an active kid, I was not very athletic, so I was as nervous about the freshman sports challenges as an English major in a chemistry lab.

I trained for an entire semester to make it. Colleges and universities mostly did away with those requirements, but thanks to a team of runners and journalists, the mile is making a comeback.

This Time it was no Picnic!

IMG_0251.JPGOne of my all-time favorite races is the Picnic Island Adventure Run in Tampa, Florida. It is actually a series of three races that take place once a month on Friday nights in May, June and July. Hot and humid do not begin to describe the weather at 6:45 p.m. on the small island in Tampa Bay under a cloudless summer sky. So once you’ve accepted the weather factor, you’re ready for the real challenge.

This adventure run is unique and definitely not one of those mud runs or extreme obstacle races where you sign away your life in a waiver. I don’t do dangerous races like that.

(Editor’s note: RunBlogRun asked Cait Chock to interview Sally Bergeson, founder and CEO of Oiselle, one of the few running apparel brands sally-thumb-500x500-10191.jpgmaking headway in a business channel fraught with minefields. In a recent meeting, with a key brand, an active woman runner on the staff was asked about Oiselle. She noted how well made the product is and how much she liked it. Oiselle is reaching its target market. Sally Bergeson is quite adept at using social media and developing a conversation with her consumer, who she knows well, better than most brands that are larger. Bergeson gets it: running businesses win business one pair of running shorts at a time.)

We're witnessing an entire shift in how companies sponsor and market their athletes. Among those spearheading this change is Oiselle, a women's clothing line, founded by Sally Bergesen.
