Cain_Mary1-USout14-thumb-500x750-9423.jpgMary Cain's race, among US high schoolers, may have been one of the most anticipated events of the week here! That she won was pretty impressive, because, on the world level, this just does not happen for American women.

That she did it in the style she did, with the finesse, control and final kick that she did is a product of her coach, Alberto Salazar, showing her how to win races.

But that doesn’t mean the 26.2-mile race, part of the 59th annual Grandfather Mountain Highland Games on July 12, was easy, he said.

“It was tough — definitely the most challenging marathon I’ve ever run,” Masland said.

18 July 2014, Meeting Herculis, Monaco — Molly Huddle was here for one reason, setting the American record once again, and putting it out of reach for awhile. During most of the race, she had the company of Shannon Rowbury who followed her every move, as she had in Sacramento.

With 300 meters to go, Molly Huddle took off and put six seconds on Shannon Rowbury.
