FirecrackerFast5k_Brechts.jpgThree short, fast races happen during the months of June and July in Arkansas. It’s true there are more 5k races held in the state than any other races. However, on back-to-back weekends in June, central Arkansas goes against the norm with the Go! Mile and Arkansas Runner 2-Mile Race. Both test speed, endurance, and heart.

Go! Mile
Making its debut in 2011, the Go! Mile has already become a race that many look forward to. It’s not often runners get to run a road mile in Arkansas. The Go! Mile offers runners the only certified road mile course in the state. But, this race is not only for those that have uncanny speed.

BrianDeal_YuTsuchida_Marathonmalefemale.jpgGRANDFATHER MOUNTAIN, N.C. – Both the male and female top finishers in the 45th Annual Grandfather Mountain Marathon were first-time participants. Other podium finishers had experience in this famously difficult marathon. Runners began the race at Kidd Brewer Stadium in Boone N.C. and then ran 26.2 grueling miles to the finish line in MacRae Meadows at the base of Grandfather Mountain.

First-time participant Brian Deal was the Marathon winner with a time of 2:44.4. Deal, 28, lives in St. Louis, Mo. and went to school at Appalachian State University in Boone. The race was a good chance for him to have a reunion with many college friends and to visit the High Country.

Anderson,Surrette.JPGBehind handwritten signs, faces glow. Some are smiling. Some are fierce. All are determined and hopeful. These faces belong to runners and we stand up for what keeps us going.

Since Mother’s Day, runners in the Triangle have been putting it on the line, testifying about why we run; why we get up at the crack of dawn, lace up our shoes and hit the pavements and running trails in good weather and in bad. When it rains, when it snows, and when it is hot.

We run for wine, beer, chocolate, bacon, doughnuts and cupcakes.

Kitchen Divided_COVER_CMYK.jpgMy second “baby” has been born -- my new book, “Kitchen Divided-Vegan Dishes for Semi-Vegan Households,” has been shipped by the publisher to the usual distribution networks. It’s already off to a great start on Amazon, the numbers by which everything is measured. Like my first book, “Eat Vegan on $4 a Day,” my publisher says it takes several months to get into full distribution.

As I wrote in the first book, it’s more important to have a person who loves and respects you than a clone at the dinner table. My soulmate and dear hubby, Clarence, would sooner die than give up his steak. As you might imagine, I’ve tempted him with everything I can think of, including my good health. But as I say in “Kitchen Divided,” you can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make it drink.
