Medical Pros at Little Rock Marathon

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (1/17/2018) – CHI St. Vincent Heart Institute has renewed its sponsorship of the Little Rock Marathon.

For the past ten years, cardiologist Jim Shuffield, M.D. has led a team of nearly 60 physicians and other healthcare professionals who staff aid stations along the 26.2 mile course that ends at the Statehouse Convention Center where his team of volunteer physicians and staff provide additional assistance to runners.

Under the headline, “The Dawning Of A New Era For T&FN,” the company said “these aren’t the best of times for ink & paper-based publications.”

NAPLES, FL — Parker Stinson of Boulder, CO, won the Naples Daily News Half Marathon on Sunday in 1:03:34.3. Austin Richmond of Babson Park, FL, was second in 1:06:49.7, followed by Kurt Roeser of Boulder, CO., in 1:07:37.

Women’s winner was Belainesh Gebre of Flagstaff, AZ, in 1:12:55.3, followed by Lindsey Schert of San Francisco in 1:15:12.8, and Kathryn Fluehr of Boulder in 1:15:22.

JEKYLL ISLAND, GA — Juan Soto of Gainesville, GA, won the Jekyll Island Marathon on Jan. 14, finishing in 2:47:26.3. Second went to Charlie Osmond of New York in 2:48:50.9, while Adam Hook of Plainfield, IN, was third in 2:51:32.6.

MOBILE, AL — Samantha Gardner of Daphne, AL, was the female champion at the 17th Annual Servis 1st Bank First Light Marathon on Jan. 14, completing the 26.2 miles in 3:14:16.

CHARLESTON, SC — George Oliver of Winston-Salem, NC, was the overall winner Jan. 13 of the Charleston Marathon, finishing in 2:34:31.40. Kevin Bennert of New Bern, NC, was second in 2:46:21.73, followed by Brett Haffner of Marana, AZ, in 2:49:29.79.

Schafbuch, Linck Win Marathon

BATON ROUGE, LA — Ryan Schafbuch and Andrea Linck were winners of the Louisiana Marathon on Sunday. Schafbuch, a former Baton Rouge resident, repeated as victor in 2:36:31. Linck, of Baton Rouge, finished in 3:00:02 in her first-ever marathon.

John Hitter was second overall in 2:41:45, followed by Ryan Barrow (2:41:58), Adam Lazrus (2:44:44), and Cory Bourg (2:47).

Blind Man’s Run Across America

The first and only blind person to run across America, Jason Romero, has released a book about his 59.5 day and 3,063 mile run from Los Angeles to New York which took place from March 25 – May 23, 2016. Jason took on the challenge of a lifetime after hitting rock bottom - being divorced, unemployed and spiraling into a deep depression when a degenerative eye condition rendered him blind with limited light perception.

Accord, Paul are Winners

ST. BERNARD PARISH, LA — Nick Accord, 25, and Rachel Paul, 24, were the winners of the 111th Anniversary Jackson Day 9K. Accord was overall winner of the 5.6 mile event in 32:21. Paul was female champion in 32:21.

Other winners included:

Youth 15-under: Henry Engelhard, 11, in 37:56 and Phoebe Endriss, 13, in 43:42.

Masters: Doug Holmes 35:42 and Kristen Bendich 38:55.
