Finisher total rises 13% year-over-year, while total events surge 18%

WICHITA, Kan. - For the second year in a row, finisher numbers for Fourth of July races increased, ranking the holiday as the second most popular among runners in 2016, sitting only behind Thanksgiving.

LOUISVILLE, KY — The Louisville Triple Crown of Running, a popular annual series of three races, has announced its 2018 dates:

Anthem 5K Fitness Classic, March 10.

Rodes City Run 10K, March 24.

Papa John’s 10 Miler, April 7.

CHAPIN, SC — Ryan Plexico raced home the winner of the Hewitt 5K on June 24 in 18:11. Second went to hometown runner Travis Nichols in 19:31. Third was Nathaniel Wilburn of Lexington in 20:22.

Top female was Kendra Miles of Lexington in 24:28. Laura Broussard of Irmo was second in 24:30 while Kelly Hoppmann of Columbia was third in 25:02.

Claycomb, Pascoe win Brickfest 5K

MALVERN, AR — Sara and Tina Claycomb of Warren finished 1-2 in the female division of the Brickfest 5K. Sara, 20, finished first in 21:18.85. Tina, 46, was second in 23:14. Third was Kelsey Walker, 32, of Russellville in 23:14.

NEW ORLEANS — Four rising college freshmen have been awarded New Orleans Track Club scholarships. Winners are NOTC members who participate in NOTC races, and are members of a high school track and/or cross country team. The Stevens Realty Group sponsors the scholarships.

Cat Bradley wins Western States

AUBURN, California -- American Cat Bradley won the Western States 100 in a time of 19:31:30. The Western States 100 is a 100.2 mile endurance race that begins in Squaw Valley, California at the site of the 1980 Olympic Games and ends in Auburn, California. The race is considered the oldest 100-mile trail race in the world, since it began in 1974.

JOHNSON CITY, TN — David McDaniel of Hampton, TN, was the first finisher at the June 24 Run the Tweetsie Half Marathon trail race in 1:21:31.19. Harrison Barrett of Johnson City was second in 1:26:53.09, followed by David Scott of Greeneville in 1:29:40.85.

GREENSBORO, North Carolina – The youngest Rio Olympian Sydney McLaughlin (Dunellen, New Jersey) completed her high school track career with her fourth consecutive 400m hurdles title at the New Balance Nationals Outdoors in Greensboro, North Carolina, on Sunday. McLaughlin finished in 54.22, besting her previous meet record of 54.46.

WICHITA, Kan. - A total of 1,900,000 runners finished a half marathon in the U.S. in 2016, down from the record high of just over two million finishers in 2014 and slightly down from the 1,986,600 total in 2015. While participation dropped, there were a record 2,800 U.S. half marathon events in 2016, up from 2,700 in 2015.
