Dear RJ runners: Let’s share our inspiration. We can generate a monthly column about that spark that keeps us and others, people we know and don’t know, on the path to PRs, good health, satisfaction, social ministry, and the celebration of life.

My experiences might entice you to remember your special moments on the trail, in an event, or running in your neighborhood. My first running “seed” was planted in 1956, in high school, by a fellow student a few years ahead of me.

By Richard Ferguson, Ph.D.
Ferguson,_Richard.jpg___3.jpgMaybe you’re looking at running in your first race, or possibly you’re considering tackling a half-marathon, maybe even a full marathon. It may be that you have been running for years and have begun to consider running an ultra event or even a triathlon. But there seems to be a little problem, and that problem is you are a bit scared of the new challenge. You are constantly asking yourself, “Can I do this?” You may possibly have some fearful visions of not being able to finish that first race, marathon, or ultra event. Truth is, the real challenge may not actually be the event you are considering running in, but the thoughts in your head that are trying to convince you that you can’t be successful.

By Pete Rea/ZAP Fitness
Rea,_Peter.jpg__0.jpgEach summer here at ZAP we are fortunate to have some of American long distance running’s early greats come through our doors as guest speakers. From Boston Marathon winners Bill Rodgers and Greg Meyer to Patti Catalano (first American women to break 2:30 in the marathon) and Dick Beardsley, we enjoy having those who have reached the sport’s pinnacle impart their knowledge. One common thread amongst these 1970s and 1980s running boomers was their style of training. In short the stars of the Carter, Reagan years ran and ran more.

The weather is changing, the temperatures are increasing - beware of dehydration!

By the time that you are thirsty, you are already dehydrated. With dehydration comes many unpleasant manifestations, including muscle cramps, fatigue, faintness and overheating.

A THIRSTY MUSCLE IS A TIGHT MUSCLE. And tight muscles can lead to painful joints.
