By Lee Fidler

Fidler,_Lee.jpg_.jpgAs I have just passed another birthday, pieces of this article have been floating through my mind for several days. However, capturing these thoughts has been like trying to catch fog. Perhaps a mild existential crisis is hard to explain. Your adaptation may be different but here are some of my nods to aging.

Forty-seven years after my first race, goal setting has changed. Rather than setting long range performance goals, I often look six months to a year out. Those are based on where I am now and performance in the same or a similar race last year.

Ferguson,_Richard.jpg__.jpgNone of us were born being positive or negative thinkers. We have all learned to think in a positive or negative manner through varied life and socialization experiences. The word “learn” is the key here! We can all learn to become more positive in how we approach our running and how we approach life in general.

Life has its ups and downs, ongoing challenges, and obstacles that must be overcome. We can use these challenges as an excuse for not trying or even as an excuse for failing, or we can look at challenges as an opportunity to become successful.

By Carolyn Mather

Mather,_Carolyn.jpg__.jpgThe death of Sally Meyerhoff was the main topic as the elite field assembled at the 34th Gate River Run national 15K championship. Sally died instantly when she crashed her bicycle into a truck after failing to yield the right of way. We were all reminded how precious and fragile life is and how quickly it can be gone. Sally was a friend, one of my dark horse picks to make the 2012 Olympic team and an incredible role model for young athletes. She had just obtained her professional triathlete license and finally had her life exactly where she wanted it to be.

The Event. This special event organized by the Greenville Track Club is an attempt to beat the World Record for the 100 x 5K Relay, which consists of 100 different persons running one 5K (5000 meters) each, consecutively. We’re calling it the GTC “100 in 30” Challenge. The “100 in 30” means 100 5Ks in 30 hours.
